Minister Designate for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has condemned the military invasion of Parliament on 6th Janaury 2021 during the election of a Speaker of Parliament.
Some armed military personnel stormed parliament on 6th January to restore order while chaos broke out over the election of Speaker of Parliament.
The heavily armed personnel were, however, chased out by some MPs who chanted the national anthem while some MPs were seen speaking to the military to move back.
Reacting to the issue before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday 10th February 2021, Minister designate for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah said, although the act is condemnable, a commander felt that things were getting out hand and decided to go and restore order.
“This is something that shouldn’t have happened”, Albert Kan-Dapaah told the appointment committee.
Asked whether or not investigations had been launched into the incident, the Minister designate for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah said he needed to find out whether the report on the investigation into the soldiers in parliament was out.
Meanwhile, Colonel Festus Aboagye, retired Ghana Army Officer and security analyst described the invasion of military in Parliament as needless.
According to him, there was no need for the military invasion as the MP’s could have handled the issue without the military.
He added that there was no aggression that warranted the invasion of the military.
“We all saw how the MPs themselves calmed their colleagues without the support of even the Police present. So the ordering of the military was needless. What has the military got to do in Parliament. They had no business there Who ordered the military to go Parliament? It was democratically needless on the part of whoever gave the order, regardless of the weakness of the clerk in ensuring order. The marshals and MP’s themselves could have managed the situation, ” he added.
