Kumasi to Shut Down for Asantehemaa’s Final Funeral Rites on September 18

Asantehemaa's Final Funeral

The Manhyia Palace has announced the closure of all economic and educational activities in Kumasi on Thursday, September 18, 2025, in observance of the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

As part of traditional protocols, residents of Kumasi are expected to observe an indoor curfew from 7:00 PM on Thursday until 4:00 AM on Friday.

During this period, the Queen Mother will be transitioned to the Royal Mausoleum at Breman in the Suame Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Ambassador Nana Effah Apenteng, Chief of Bompata and Chairman of the Funeral Planning Committee, addressed journalists in Kumasi, explaining that the closure of institutions — including schools and banks — is intended to honour the memory of the late Queen Mother and allow the public to fully participate in the solemn rites.

He urged the general public to strictly adhere to the directives, emphasizing the cultural significance of the funeral, referred to in Asante tradition as “Dote Yie”.

He called on all residents to observe the occasion with reverence and uphold the dignity of Asanteman’s traditions.

The final funeral rites will span four days, from Monday through Thursday. On the final day, the body of the late Asantehemaa will be moved from the Manhyia Palace to the Bantama Royal Mausoleum for traditional rites, before being laid to rest at the Breman Royal Mausoleum — the final resting place of Asante royalty.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III served as the 14th Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom from 2017 until her passing in 2025 at the age of 98. She was the biological sister of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and succeeded their mother, Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem II.
