A former NDC Parliamentary candidate for Anyaa Sowutuom Constituency, Mr David Nii Abossey Braide has stated that land guards do not fear police and therefore they (police) cannot be used to successfully stop the activities of the landguards.

Rather, he said the land guards fear military men, stating the Government should use them to fight the canker.

His comments follow the shooting of five landguards by the police during an anti-land guard and robbery operation at Bortianor and nearby communities in the Greater Accra Region last Thursday.

According to the Ghana Police, a shootout with the suspects led to the casualties.

“On June 8th, 2023, the police conducted an operation targeting criminal elements involved in a robbery and land guard activities. These individuals had been terrorizing residents and landowners in Bortianor and nearby communities.

“Upon spotting the approaching police team, the suspects opened fire from their hideout, prompting the police to return fire. As a result, five of the suspects were injured and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The remaining suspects fled the scene and are still on the run,” the Police said in a statement.

Exhibits retrieved from the crime scene include one (1) AK47 Assault rifle, ten (10) rounds of AK47 ammunition, one (1) pump action gun with nine (9) rounds of BB cartridges, two (2) pistols with ten (10) rounds of 9mm ammunition, one (1) unregistered Toyota Tacoma pickup, four (4) motorbikes, three (3) of which are unregistered, a knife and a pepper spray.

The police said they were actively pursuing the remaining suspects, some of whom are believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the operation.

Speaking about the incident on Atinka TV‘s current Affairs programme, ‘The Agenda’ with Nana Yaw Fianko, Mr David Nii Abossey Braide said the landguards do not fear police because they work with them and they have the same weapons.

He said some police officers have lands in areas where land guards operate .

He also questioned where the landguards get the weapons from, saying the weapons they use were not ‘small weapons’.

Mr David Nii Abossey Braide who once lived in an area that experienced the wrath of landguards said most of the times, when the landguards see the soldiers, they run away.

He said land guards activities caused Ghana a lot, explaining that sometimes if one brings in investors and they want to build, they end up running away because of these land guard issues.

“If we want these land guard issues to cease, what they fear is soldiers; they do not fear the police,” he said. “Let’s give that job to the soldiers if we want landguard activities to cease.”
