Leaked audio: GPRTU Sec. defends Deputy Transport Minister over LGBTQI

Deputy

Deputy Minister of Transport, Frederick Obeng Adom, has been exonerated over reports that he kicked against the reduction in fuel prices due to the alleged withdrawal of support to Ghana by International Donors over the raging LBGQI+ debate.

The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators in Ghana including the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) embarked on a sit down Strike on Monday, December 6, 2021.

This was to get the government scrap all the taxes on the pump price of petroleum products to ease the burden on Ghanaians.

Due to their demands, the driver unions had to meet the Ministry of Transport to deliberate on the best way to solve their issues.

An audio which was leaked few days ago suggested that during the back and forth with the Ministry, the Deputy Minister of Transport said government could not reduce fuel price as the drivers demanded because international sponsors had withdrawn their support to Ghana for not accepting the legalisation of LGBTQI.

But speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Godfred Abulbire said the one who made the allegations was called and he admitted the claims were false.

According to him, as a leader, he asked the person in question, who is also part of the Leadership of the Coalition of Concerned Drivers to retract his statement and apologise to the Minister and all parties who had been offended with regards to the audio.

Failure to do that, he said the Leadership of the GPRTU will deal with the man in question.

He said the Minister rather said that government could not raise enough money to construct roads or do other developmental projects if it scraps all the taxes

“I listened to that audio and my name was even mentioned but it was an unfortunate statement made by David Agboado. They explained to us how difficult it was to reduce the tax and we accepted. The Deputy Minister for Transport and the Minister for Energy came, and the man never said anything close to what David said. He never said anything about LGBTQI,” he said.
