A security expert, Chief Inspector (RTD) Michael Asamoah says the major political parties in Ghana have police officers they use to do evil or bad things when they come to power.
His assertion follows a viral leaked audio which captures the voices of a police commissioner and an official of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ploting the removal of the IGP.
The commissioner who describes himself as COP Mensah and is said to be retiring is heard telling the politician that the IGP is too firm and will not allow machinations in next year’s polls if he is not removed.
The politician further notes that the nature of security the IGP provided during the Assin North by-election shows he will not allow any rigging in the polls.
“This IGP won’t help us. He won’t, he wants everything to be done fairly and we don’t win elections that way. If we don’t remove him we can’t break the 8, in politics we need machinations and this IGP won’t allow that,” the commissioner is heard saying.
He also stated that the President has refused to listen to his appeals to replace the IGP with him.
Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Nana Yaw Fianko, Chief Inspector (RTD) Michael Asamoah said it was not surprising that there are political party footsoldiers who enter the service through the backdoor and they are used for certain things.
He complained that in the security service, there are known NPP and NDC police officers who are being used by the political parties for their parochial interests, pointing that the discussion in the leaked audio is one of them.
The Security Expert cited instances, including by-elections such as Ayawaso West Wuogon, Techiman South during the 2020 general election, and others, in which security personnel killed unarmed Ghanaians who went to observe the vote count, and no investigations or prosecutions have been conducted to date.
“When the political parties come to power, they have police officers they use to do evil or bad things. It is not surprising that there are political party foot-soldiers who enter the service through the back door and they are used for certain things,” He said.
Chief Inspector (RTD) Michael Asamoah also said they allow themselves to be used because even when they do evil, nothing will be done to them.
He noted that the politicisation of the service has frustrated some officers and forced some good ones to resign while some have also been maligned and sidelined because of their political affiliations, saying it is these same politicians that have created such problems.
Meanwhile, he said the tape is dangerous towards the 2024 election, saying they want to replicate what happened at Ayawaso West Wuogon.
“It is a reality that they use most of these police officers for certain parochial interests which is very dangerous so in this very case, if it is true, then they have to investigate it very well and the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior must sit down to analyse this situation,” he said.
