Lightwave E-Health Files Defamation Suit Against Health Minister Akandoh

Lightwave eHealth Care Solutions Limited has filed a writ at the High Court in Accra against Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accusing him of making false and damaging public statements about the company’s operations and contracts with the Ministry of Health.

The suit, filed at the General Jurisdiction Division of the High Court in Accra, seeks a declaration that the Minister’s comments amounted to malicious falsehood and caused reputational and financial harm to the company and its affiliates.

The company is also seeking an order for a public retraction and apology, damages for economic losses, and any further relief the court deems appropriate.

According to the statement of claim, Lightwave says it entered into contracts with the Ministry of Health in 2016 and 2019 to provide electronic healthcare systems and services, which were successfully executed and validated by relevant authorities.

It further claims that after the expiration of the 2019 contract in December 2024, it continued to provide services at the request of the Ministry, despite the absence of a formal agreement and delayed payment.

The company alleges that the Health Minister made several public comments between October and November 2025, which it describes as false and damaging.

Among the claims cited in the suit are allegations that the company misrepresented the number of health facilities it had implemented, overbilled the government, and hosted Ghana’s electronic medical records outside the country.

The company also disputes claims that it received 11 million US dollars in 2024 and that it delivered only a fraction of contracted health facilities.

Lightwave in its writ further states that the Minister’s comments were aired on media platforms, including a television interview, and resulted in reputational damage both in Ghana and internationally.

It claims the remarks contributed to the suspension of a proposed 50 million US dollar partnership with the World Bank.

The company maintains that all its work was properly documented and verified through Ministry of Health processes, and that the allegations were made without due verification.

The writ issued on March 25, 2026, demands that the defendant enter an appearance within eight days of service or risk judgment being entered in his absence.

The case is expected to proceed at the High Court in Accra.
