The criminality of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexuality, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) is non-negotiable, The Minister-Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has said.
Law lecturer and anti -Gay rights activist, Moses Foh Amoaning, in 2020, attributed the increasing number of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex (LGBTQI) to the failure of successive governments to address the LGBTQ menace in their manifestos.
This statement by the astute lawyer came after a female soldier of the Ghana Armed Forces, Staff Sergeant Vida Owusu, married her lesbian partner in a private ceremony in Accra.
Recently, the LGBTQ+ opened an office to serve as a safe haven for members of the community, a move which has been fiercely opposed by critics of the group including Foe Amoaning.
Critics of the LQBTQ have called on government to shut the office and prevent the group from holding any form of meeting in the office.
Speaking to the Appointments Committee in Parliament on Wednesday 17th February 2021, the Minister Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo explained that the issue of LGBTQ when mentioned draws controversies although Ghana’s cultural practices frowns on it.
” The issue of LGBTQ+ is an issue which when mentioned creates some sort of controversies but what I want to say is that our laws are clear on such practices. So the issue Criminality of LGBTQ+ is non negotiable and our cultural practices also frowns on it and these are two stands on the matter and this is what I stand for”, Adwoa Safo told the appointment Committee.
