Mahama promises electric motorbikes for Okada riders

Constituency

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag-bearer, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to establish an electric motorbike assembling plant if he wins the 2024 poll.

He plans to offer the motorbikes on a hire-purchase basis to commercial motorbike operators, known as “Okada” riders.

Former President Mahama, who was addressing motor riders in Ashaiman, stated that he has spoken with two companies to open an assembling plant for electric motorbikes.

The motorbikes, he explained, will be provided on a hire-purchase basis, allowing riders to pay in installments.

He also indicated that the electric motorbikes will not consume petrol, and riders can exchange their batteries at designated centres for a small fee.

Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to legalising motorbike riders’ operations if elected, acknowledging their significant role.

He emphasised the importance of safety, urging riders to wear reflective jackets and follow road instructions.

According to him, an NDC government under his leadership would dedicate a portion of new roads to motorbike riders.

Mahama’s promise aims to support the livelihoods of motorbike riders, recognising their contribution to the economy.

The initiative also promotes environmentally friendly transportation and road safety.
