Make June 4, December 31 public holidays– Asiedu Nketia

Make June 4

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia wants the June 4 Uprising and the December 31 Revolution to be instituted as public holidays.

According to him, the two memorable occasions in Ghana’s history are important than the proposed August 4 holiday by the NPP.
President Nana Akufo Addo and other NPP top officials recently proposed August 4 as public holiday,

Ghana’s first political party, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) was formed on August 4 at Saltpond in the Central Region. Many NPP big shots believe the day paved the way for Ghana’s Independence on 6th March, 1957.  The proposal generated heated debate on the political landscape with some Ghanaians and members of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) accusing the NPP government of distorting history just to honour its forbearers.

However, speaking at Ho in the Volta Region to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution Sunday, Asiedu Nketia said “June 4th and 31st December did something that affected the governance of this country [and] we have all benefited from what the revolutions stood and still stands for,”

“If we make june 4 a holiday, it  will further the interest of Ghana if we choose to dedicate a day or two to remind everybody about the importance of probity, accountability and social justice,” he said.
