Makola fire: Ghana Water Company fires Fire Service over lame excuses

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Ghana Water Company Ltd, Mr Stanley Martey says the Company will not allow the Ghana National Fire Service’s to blame them for not being able to bring the recent Makola fire under control.

On Monday, July 5, 2021, parts of the Accra Central Market, specifically Georgina stores in Makola was razed with fire.

About 100 shops were burnt, while a lot of peoperties worth millions of cedis were lost.

According to some shop owners and eyewitness, although opposite the Ghana National Fire Service, the Service did not attend to the calls early when the fire initially started.

Answering to the Public, the Fire Service said they did not have water in the tenders and had to get water at nearby areas in order to fight the fire.

According to reports, about 9 fire tenders were used to quench the fire, due to its magnitude.

The PRO of Fire Service, Ellis Robinson Okoe also complained that the hydrants in the city had been blocked by the Ghana Water Company Ltd since 1992.

But speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Stanley Martey said all the excuses the Fire Service is giving are lame.

He said Ghana Water had not sealed any hydrants, explaining that there were 70 hydrants in the central business district and 11 functioning ones closer to where the fire incident occurred.

The PRO also stated that as an institution, he was expecting the Fire Service to do its investigations and come out with facts agreed by stakeholders, but it went ahead to address the public without facts, adding that Ghana Water will not take any blame from Fire Service.

“If they said the truth at the press conference, there wouldn’t have been any problem, but all what they said was false,” he charged.

Meanwhile, Mr Stanley Martey said even if there was no pressure, Fire Service could have adopted a mechanism to get pressure in the water, instead of complaining that the pressure was low.
