The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has destroyed illegal drugs with an estimated street value of $350 million at Bundase in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.

The public destruction, which included large quantities of cocaine and other narcotics, forms part of NACOC’s efforts to rid Ghana of illicit drugs and to make the country an unattractive destination for the narcotics trade.

Director General of NACOC, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, said the exercise was carried out in the presence of officials from other relevant agencies, including the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and was conducted in line with environmental safety standards.

The event was also part of activities leading up to World Drugs Day, which will be observed on June 26.

Brigadier General Mantey stressed the harmful effects of illicit drug use, particularly on the youth, and called for nationwide support in the ongoing war against drugs. He announced that NACOC will launch a special operation in July to crack down on drug dealers and traffickers.

Deputy Director General of NACOC, Alexander Twum Barima, gave details of the substances destroyed, emphasizing that not all were intended for export. He revealed that some of the seized drugs came from pharmacies unlawfully selling prescription medications without authorization.

He warned that such illegal practices would no longer be tolerated, especially as NACOC has begun working closely with the Pharmacy Council to clamp down on offending institutions.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations, assuring the public that efforts to combat the drug menace will be sustained and intensified.
