New districts will not necessitate new constituencies – O. B. Amoah

Deputy Local Government Minister, O. B. Amoah, says the government has no intention of creating new constituencies with the creation and elevation of 38 new districts.

According to him, the creation of these districts forms part of the government's agenda to enhance the decentralization process to deepen democracy in order to speed up development.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Thursday 15th March 2018, dispatched government appointees across the country to inaugurate 38 newly created district assemblies.

The President through his appointees assured residents of the new districts of his readiness to ensure the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) as scheduled.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Deputy Local Government Minister, O. B. Amoah explained that the creation of the districts was largely based on size and population of the Districts.

According to him, some areas did not benefit from the creation of these new districts since any attempt to create a new district will lead to the creation of an additional constituency which will require the services of an additional Member of Parliament.

“There were numerous calls for the 275 members of parliament to be reduced. So why should we even add more?  The government is not ready at the moment,” he added.
