Nkrumah’s Birthday: Monday, Sept. 23 declared Public Holiday

The Ministry of Interior has declared Monday, 23rd September, 2024 as a Public Holiday in observance of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Sector Minister, Henry Quartey.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day originally falls on Saturday, 21st September, 2024 which is a weekend and has therefore been shifted to Monday.

“The general public is hereby informed that Saturday, 21st September, 2024 marks Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day which is a Statutory Public Holiday,” the Ministry stated.

It added that,”However, in view of the fact that 21st September, 2024 falls on a Saturday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601) declared Monday, 23rd September, 2024 as an additional Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

About Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day

This holiday commemorates the birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President. Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaian politician, political revolutionist, and theorist.

He was famously known as the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana. He was one of the major driving forces behind leading the Gold Coast to independence from Britain.
