The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has urged Ghanaians to make use of nearby health facilities instead of crowding a few major hospitals.
Speaking at the TMG National Health Dialogue, he said many people in cities like Accra ignore clinics and district hospitals and rush to big referral hospitals for treatment.
According to him, Ghana has enough health facilities, including district hospitals, health centres and CHPS compounds, but they are underused. He stressed the need to educate the public to trust these facilities, noting that they can handle many health problems.
Dr. Nawaane also called for more investment in training doctors locally instead of sponsoring students to study abroad. He said local training will help doctors better understand diseases common in Ghana and improve healthcare delivery.
He praised Dr. Nanna Amo Tobbin for investing in health education, describing it as a bold and important step.
The lawmaker further highlighted challenges in rural healthcare, including lack of doctors, poor accommodation, and limited career growth opportunities. He said these issues discourage health workers from accepting postings to remote areas.
To solve this, he proposed incentives for doctors, expansion of health facilities, and the use of mobile clinics and telemedicine to reach underserved communities.
Dr. Nawaane added that government plans to strengthen primary healthcare and make it more accessible, especially for people in rural areas.
