The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency. The NPP has filed an interlocutory injunction to stop the EC from proceeding with the rerun.
The EC’s decision followed disputes over the results of the December 7, 2024, general election. However, the NPP argues that the EC’s actions are unjust, stating that no consensus was reached during consultations with stakeholders.
Mustapha criticized the EC’s move, warning it could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system. He emphasized that the EC lacks the authority to unilaterally rerun elections in selected polling stations and warned of a dangerous precedent if allowed.
The Ablekuma North seat has remained vacant for over six months due to a dispute over the collation of results. Preliminary results showed Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie (NPP) narrowly ahead with 34,613 votes, while Ewurabena Aubynn (NDC) received 34,199 votes. Aubynn rejected the results, citing alleged irregularities, including the fabrication of pink sheets.
The process was further delayed by acts of vandalism in January 2025 and a fire that destroyed ballots in December 2024. The EC, citing unverified scanned pink sheets, announced the rerun for July 11, 2025.
As the contest intensifies, both parties are ramping up their campaigns, with the rerun poised to determine the next representative for the constituency.
