The Minister of Infomation, Kojo Oppong Nkruma has commended the Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Center, a subsidiary of the Tobinco Group of companies for its partnership with EXIMBANK Ghana to produce Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin locally to treat covid-19 patients.
He Noted that the Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Center has been active in responding to calls to locally produce sanitizers and other important medication that can help in the fight against COVID-19.
He made the commendations while speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie, today (Wednesday, May 06, 2020).
We recall that about a month ago the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo met with Pharmaceutical companies to discuss how to fight covid-19.
According to the Minister, “One part of the things we need to fight COVID-19 is to be able to produce things locally. Kumasi said they have produced a ventilator, but something like hand sanitisers we would have had shortages if we played, because the Chinese who were exporting it closed their export channels so how would we have gotten it?,” he quizzed.
He further said that, “The president asked them what they needed to produce sanitisers, whether it was money or alcohol and we have helped and EXHIM Ghana is pushing some of the money so that they can produce the medicine that can be used locally. This will help boost medicines and medical aids we need to help fight COVID-19.”
The Minister also stated that,”We thank EXHIM Ghana, We also thank Tobinco for demonstrating that he has the knowledge and the capacity to produce medicines and medical aids. He has demonstrated that he has knowledge. Because if not that, we would have been in lapses amidst the COVID-19. One could have money but cannot even get it to buy. But because Tobinco exists, with the support of EXHIM Ghana, Tobinco can produce more for us to use,” he added.
Background:
EXIMBANK Ghana is set to collaborate with Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Center, a member of the Tobinco Group of companies to produce Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin locally to treat covid-19 patients.
Covid-19 patients treated with Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin recover quickly but the drug is not produced locally on the large scale. Furthermore, the drugs value has shot up on the international market due to its potency in the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
EXIMBANK is highly impressed with Tobinco Group’s utilization of previous grant facility extended to the group and, therefore, ready to advance a new 5 million dollar facility to help tackle the pandemic in the country.
EXIMBANK plays a major role as a partner of Ghanaian industries, especially SMEs, in their export efforts, by offering products and services at all stages of the production and distribution cycle, including import of technology, export of products, developing exports, production, marketing, pre-and post-shipment.
