Over 500 foreigners enter Ghana illegally every week- Security Expert

A Security Expert, Mr Paul Boateng says one of Ghana’s biggest challenges with its security is the illegal entry and settlement of a lot of people from the Sahel into the country.

According to him, a research conducted by some security experts indicated that persons who enter the country illegally through the borders every week are over 500.

That, he said makes the country’s borders insecure.

Mr Boateng was speaking to security issues in the country and ways to tackle them on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, with Co-host, Abena Dufie Asare Adjepong.

Commenting on the spate of crimes, including the recent bullion van robbery, he noticed that a lot of people in the country are possessing guns, which is a big threat to security of country.

Mr Boateng said lack of employment, coupled with the galamsey issues have also challenged the security system of the country.

Despite the challenges, he said all was not lost, calling on all to help protect the country against these security threats.

“When you look at the boarder at Aflao connecting us to Togo, it is disheartening!. Our borders are so lax even though they are said to be closed. It is time for the government to put in place measures to seize all the guns from the people while the security be on guard,” he said.

Mr Boateng blamed the illegal entry of immigrants on the citizens.

“When you look at those entering illegally, it is not the government that allows them in, it is the citizens that bring them in. When they come, they settle with the citizens and so those who will engage in crimes stay with citizens. Some rent out their homes to them, some enter into relationships with the citizens and so if they will commit any crime, the citizens are mostly aware. It is time for citizens to have courage to report them,” he added.
