Suicide attack on Lybia’s Foreign Ministry kills three

Fighters have stormed Libya’s foreign ministry in the capital, Tripoli, killing at least three people, including a senior civil servant, the authorities said.

Ten other people were wounded in what officials said was a suicide attack carried out by “terrorists” on Tuesday.

A car bomb exploded near the ministry, prompting security forces to rush to the scene.

A suicide bomber then blew himself up on the second floor of the building while a second attacker died when the suitcase he was carrying exploded, according to Tarak al-Dawass, spokesperson for the special forces.

A third assailant, who was unarmed and wearing a bulletproof vest, was killed by security forces outside, added Dawass, who accused the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group of being responsible.

Early on Wednesday, ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq website.

Plumes of smoke were seen rising from the building as ambulances, paramedics and security forces gathered outside.

Security forces cordoned off the area and took control of all the buildings around the foreign ministry headquarters, Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting from Tripoli, said.

All individuals and employees have been ordered to evacuate the buildings immediately, he added.

Abdelwahed said a security official was killed in the attack, while security sources said a civil servant who headed a department in the foreign ministry was also among the victims.

Meanwhile, a source from Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade, one of the strongest armed groups in the capital, told Reuters news agency that their spokesperson, Abdulrahman Mazoughi, died in the attack.

Teenager jailed four years for extortion on Christmas eve

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday sentenced 19-year-old Kwadwo Antwi to four years imprisonment in hard labour for extortion.

Antwi took away the handbag of one Georgina Oppong containing two mobile phones, two chargers, an MP3 Radio set and GH¢10.00 through threats.

He admitted the offence and was convicted on his own plea.

Police Chief Inspector Christine Bensah told the Court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Essandoh that Georgina is a cleaner and a resident of Pantang whilst the convict, unemployed, also lived at Pantang Bola Junction, all suburbs in the Greater Accra Region.

She said on December 10, this year, at about 1000 hours, the Prosecution witness was on her way to work when she met the convict at a footpath leading to the Pantang Nursing Training School.

She said, Antwi, armed with a piece of iron rod threatened to harm Georgina if she doesn’t surrender her handbag.

Chief Inspector Bensah said a struggle ensued between the two over the bag but Antwi overpowered the victim when after hitting her on the head started running pulling along the handbag.

The Prosecution said Georgina then raised an alarm which attracted some farmers who pursued and arrested Antwi.

She said the suspect then was handed over to the Adenta Police who retrieved the bag but the chargers and the MP3 radio set could not be accounted for.

She said the convict admitted the offence in his caution statement and was arraigned accordingly.

Bagbin to apply experience, maturity to lead NDC to victory

Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, MP for Nadowli Kaleo, on Monday registered confidence to win the presidential primaries of the party to lead it to victory in the 2020 general elections.

Mr Babgin, 61, who is also the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Lawyer by profession is dwelling on his close to 26 years’ experience in Parliament, coupled with top leadership roles in Parliament and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to lead the party to victory.

He said: “My record as Member of Parliament and as a leader in parliament for 18 good years and my leadership role in the party; the record speaks for itself.”

At a press conference in Accra on Monday, Mr Bagbin, told journalists of his vast experience in politics, local and international and both in parliament and outside parliament.

He said he is vying to be elected as flagbearer of the NDC to give back to the nation what it has invested in him.

Global interactions, the wealth of knowledge and experience over the years, which he had used to mentor or associated with several leaders in Ghana, coupled massive grass-root support gives him an edge to pull a surprise and win the flagbearer race.

Mr Bagbin said with the right leadership, the NDC will win back power from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 elections.

He condemned politics of money and promised an all-inclusive government that would feature prominently traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and the press as well as local governance structures for effective governance and check on corruption.

He assured the rank and file of the NDC that he would continue to champion human-centred principles, policies and actions and with the massive backing of a lot of core supporters all over the country, he would pull a shock at the primaries.

“There are many areas that I haven’t touched yet, but my support base in those areas are solid. And, so, I don’t need to tell you but the shock will be produced by my good self…. I’m sure you’ll not be surprised if I come out as the victor.

“…I must say the base is ready, the ground is fertile and with the right leadership, 2020 is for us to take.”

However, if the party does not choose him as flagbearer, he said will throw his support to whoever emerges as the victor.

Mr Bagbin is competing with former President John Dramani Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, Mr Goosie Tanoh, Mr Sylvester Mensah and Nurudeen Iddrisu at the primaries on yet to be identified date following an injunction placed by a High Court in Accra on the primaries.

Attempted car thief calls police for help escaping Volvo

Police in Norway said a teenager who tried to steal a car from a dealership ended up calling police when he found himself locked inside the vehicle.

Trondelag Police tweeted the 17-year-old called police just before 8 a.m. Monday and told officers he was trapped inside a car he had attempted to steal from a Volvo dealership.

Ebbe Kimo of the Trondelag Police said the teen was familiar with local police from previous petty crime arrests.

"He knows us quite well and clearly thought it would be OK to call us for help. A bit like calling a friend, really," Kimo told Norwegian state broadcaster NRK.

Kimo told TV2 the teenager was "perhaps not the most knowledgeable car thief."

"On his previous attempts, he was at least able to get out of the car," he said.

Kimo said the teenager would be questioned before being released to his family in time for Christmas.

What is Christmas all about?

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in humble surroundings, but His heart was full of greatness and love. This love towards all human beings was only growing day by day.

Why did Jesus come to this planet? Why did God send his Son into our world?

Let’s look deeper into the most wonderful massage of all.

Christmas is all about God’s love

The coming of Jesus is the most wonderful proof of God’s love towards us. Bible says that God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

Christmas is all about God’s kindness

The name of Jesus means “God saves”. In His name we have hope, forgiveness, redemption and salvation. Bible says: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”(Romans 10:9-10)

Christmas is about light that shines in the darkness

When we experience God’s love with open heart, we also experiences peace, kindness, mercy and forgiveness. Light starts to shine in the darkness, and we become born again and renewed. Bible says: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Christmas reminders to love others

When we come to know Jesus and His saving grace, how can we not share this love with people around us? His loving kindness overwhelms us so much that we start sharing kindness with those in need. Jesus once share two most important commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

Christmas is more than just a day

Christmas is about the new way of life, filled with grace, kindness and love. On this Christmas day, remembering how deeply God loves us, let’s be kind and loving towards each other and rejoice because the Saviour has come into the world!

Merry Christmas!

What films will you be watching in 2019?

As 2018 prepares to shuffle away like a pensionable usherette and 2019 gets ready to throw open its doors like a brand new 28-screen multiplex, it's time to cast our eyes over next year's cinematic offerings.

From Oscar hopefuls and musical biopics to superhero sequels and blockbuster remakes, there's something for almost everyone over the next 12 months.

Here's a by no means exhaustive preview of coming attractions.

January/February/March

With the Oscars taking place on 24 February, the first few months of 2019 will see a large number of film awards contenders jostling for attention.

It all kicks off on New Year's Day with quirky royal drama The Favourite staking its claim as the one to beat.

It's early days, but many are already tipping its leading lady Olivia Colman to be the latest queen-playing Brit to take home an Oscar.

Other candidates in the mix include drug addiction tear-jerker Beautiful Boy, gay conversion therapy drama Boy Erased, Nicole Kidman crime thriller Destroyer, two racially-charged period pieces (Green Book and If Beale Street Could Talk) and another royal saga in Mary Queen of Scots.

There is also a slew of biographical dramas tackling such diverse subjects as William Shakespeare (All is True), French author Colette, comedy duo Stan and Ollie, literary forger Lee Israel (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), war reporter Marie Colvin (A Private War) and ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev (The White Crow).

Fans of American politics, meanwhile, can gorge on portraits of former US vice-president Dick Cheney (Vice), one-time presidential hopeful Gary Hart (The Front Runner) and supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (On the Basis of Sex).

Elsewhere in January, director M Night Shyamalan will be hoping Glass proves as shattering as the previous two instalments in his Unbreakable trilogy.

And there'll be more superheroics in March with the arrival of Captain Marvel, the first female heroine from the MCU (that's Marvel Cinematic Universe to you) to get a stand-alone vehicle.

Animation fans can look forward to two high-profile sequels in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, not to mention manga-inspired action in Alita: Battle Angel.

Another classic animation will get the big-budget live-action makeover treatment when Tim Burton brings Dumbo back to the big screen.

The superhero bandwagon rolls on into April with the debut of Shazam!, the return of Hellboy and Marvel's Infinity War follow-up Avengers: Endgame.

April/May/June

May sees an evil superhero crash-land on Earth in Brightburn, while June brings us another batch of super-powered mutants in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Pokemon's Detective Pikachu gets his own big-screen vehicle this spring, while the Men in Black will be back – minus Will Smith – in Men in Black International.

Elton John's rise to fame will be recreated in musical biopic Rocketman, while the music of the Beatles will infuse the latest (and still untitled) comedy fantasy from Love Actually's Richard Curtis.

And then there is Aladdin, another live-action Disney remake starring Will Smith as the Genie. We knew he'd turn up somewhere, and he's reassured fans he will be blue, just like his animated predecessor.

July/August/September

There are six letters in summer and six letters in sequel. Coincidence? Probably, but there's no doubt they go together like Wallace and Gromit.

You only have to look at this year's offerings for proof, with everything from Spider-Man: Far From Home and Gerard Butler actioner Angel Has Fallen to It: Chapter 2 and Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw ensuring it will be déjà vu all over again at your local picture palace.

But wait! Who's this? Why it's only Quentin Tarantino, back to bring us a dose of Manson-era mayhem in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

There are also big-screen versions of two British telly favourites – Downton Abbeyand Horrible Histories – plus yet another Disney remake in The Lion King.

Yes Sir Elton, we can feel the love tonight.

October/November/December

More TV staples reach the big screen towards the end of the year via new versions of Charlie's Angels, The Addams Family and Masters of the Universe.

We'll also see Joaquin Phoenix give his version of Batman's nemesis in Joker, not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger in the latest iteration of the Terminator franchise.

Frozen 2 and Star Wars: Episode IX will bring down the curtain on what's certain to be a bumper year for the Disney empire.

And we'll end with something paws-itive and purr-tinent – the all-star film version of moggy mews-sical Cats, arriving on 20 December to ensure we're all feline groovy next Christmas.

Indonesia tsunami: torrential rain hampers rescue efforts as death toll rises to 429

Aid workers say many children are sick with fevers and lack clean water as experts warn more deadly waves could hit

Search efforts for the 154 people still missing in the disaster zone of the deadly tsunami that has killed at least 429 people continued on Tuesday, with some officials admitting privately that the chance of finding more survivors alive was slim.

At the Tanjung Lesung beach resort, where the pop band Seventeen was performing when the tsunami struck, resort director Kunto Wijoyo told the Guardian he spent Sunday morning helping to carry some of the 106 bodies of people who died at the holiday retreat.

“There were men, women and babies,” he said, adding that he hoped authorities would consider building a dam in the area to prevent further similar disasters.

A grass lawn nearby was strewn with crumpled metal that had formed the band’s stage, with half-destroyed musical instrument cases lying among the wreckage.

A policeman at the resort, large parts of which were obliterated by the waves, said rescue teams were legally obliged to keep searching for the missing people for seven days, beginning last Sunday morning.

Soldiers combed the coast, flying drones overhead as torrential rain contributed to tricky driving conditions for ambulances ferrying injured people to local hospitals.

Rescuers have also been searching Sumur, an area at the very southern part of where the tsunami hit.

Officials confirmed there were 1,485 people injured by the tsunami as well as 882 houses and 73 hotels and villas damaged. More than 430 boats were also damaged.

On Monday, Indonesian officials confirmed that the deadly tsunami was triggered by a chunk of the Anak Krakatau volcano slipping into the ocean.

The volcano had been spewing ash and lava for months before a 64-hectare (158-acre) section of its south-west side collapsed, an official said. “This caused an underwater landslide and eventually caused the tsunami,” said Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of the meteorological agency.

The fact that the tsunami was triggered by a volcano rather than an earthquake meant no tsunami warning was triggered, scientists said. Coastal residents reported not seeing or feeling any warning signs before waves of up to three metres high surged in.

Indonesia’s disaster agency initially said there was no tsunami threat at all, even as the killer wave crashed ashore. It was later forced to issue a correction and an apology as it pointed to a lack of early warning systems in explaining the high death toll.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Monday: “The lack of a tsunami early warning system caused a lot of victims because people did not have the time to evacuate.”

With nearly 16,082 people displaced by the disaster, volunteer groups have been cooking meals for newly homeless locals taking refuge in shelters dotted along theaffected coast.

Humanitarian workers warned that clean water and medicine supplies were dwindling as thousands crammed makeshift evacuation centres.

“A lot of the children are sick with fevers, headaches and they haven’t had enough water,” said Rizal Alimin, a doctor working for NGO Aksi Cepat Tanggap, at a local school that was turned into a temporary shelter.

“We have less medicine than usual … It’s not healthy here for evacuees. There isn’t enough clean water. They need food and people are sleeping on the floor.”

“I’ve been here three days,” said Neng Sumarni, 40, who was sleeping with her three children and husband on the school’s floor with some three dozen others.

“I’m scared because my home is right near the beach.”

Abu Salim, who works for the volunteer group Tagana, said aid workers were scrambling to stabilise the situation.

“Today we’re focusing on helping the evacuees in shelters by setting up public kitchens and distributing logistics and more tents in suitable places,” he said.

“[People] still don’t have access to running water … There are many evacuees who fled to higher ground and we still can’t reach them.”
