“You have my support” – Akufo-Addo to Isaac Dogbe, Ghanaian boxers

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has pledged his and the support of Government for Ghanaian boxers, and, by extension, the new WBO Junior Featherweight champion Isaac Dogbe.

This was after the Isaac Dogboe, the new WBO Interim Super Bantamweight Champion, paid a courtesy call on the President, on Tuesday, 9th January, 2018, at the Presidency.

Commending Ghana’s youngest boxing champion ever, President Akufo-Addo reiterated to Isaac Dogboe that “in everything you do, know that you have the prayers and the support of the Ghanaian people, from top to bottom, standing strong behind you”.

The President indicated that Government retains a huge interest in the development of boxing and boxers in Ghana, adding that “I have had a lot of discussions with my Sports Minister on what can be done to assist boxing and other important sports, which is often referred to as ‘lesser sports’, and, very soon, you will see the results of those discussions”.

He also expressed confidence in the prospect of the budding champion, by referring to the pronouncements of former World Champions Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey, that Isaac Dogbe is on the right path to be next Ghanaian world boxing Champion.

On his part, Isaac Dogbe expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his support saying “it is always an inspiration to be with a great person such as yourself”.

He continued, “We would always do our best to raise the flag of Ghana, and to also inspire the next generation, because it is the same way I also took inspiration from the people that were ahead of us – the likes of Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and most of the other real boxers that Ghana has nurtured”.

Isaac Dogboe, who is undefeated in 18 bouts noted that “the only way we can move forward is through prayers, and also to continue encouraging the Ghana Boxing Association to also keep up the good work, in terms of the needed support for the boxers and promoters. Ghana boxing is back, and we just have to keep the fire burning until the next person comes along and takes it to the next level.”

Uber and Bell Helicopter show off passenger drone concept at CES 2018

Ride-sharing has disrupted transportation in many cities, and not always for the better. Some surveys show services like Uber and Lyft actually add to the congestion in urban areas, with more cars on the road competing for the same amount of road space.

To solve the problem, many are looking to the skies. After Ehang captivated CES two years ago with its passenger drone, Uber put a stake in the clouds by publishing a white paper on airborne mobility solutions — essentially air taxis — in 2017.

Most famously, Dubai is working with EHang to develop a drone taxi service to take people (and a couple of pieces of luggage) along various fixed routes within the city.

Now things are heating up Stateside as well. At CES 2018, Bell Helicopter became the first helicopter company to exhibit at CES, debuting its concept of an air taxi. The four-person aircraft is meant to fly people between two points on fixed routes — say from a parking garage to an airport — and, though it can be flown by a pilot, is designed with autonomy in mind.

Bad news first: Bell only showed off a VR simulator of the concept, and it didn't discuss what propulsion its air taxi would use, although it did say the aircraft would take off and land vertically, then alter its configuration to fly more like a plane, similar to the Project Wing drones developed by Alphabet's X (formerly Google X).

The good news is the simulation was pretty convincing. It first takes you through a possible "vertiport" — in this case, a parking garage where the aircraft can take off from vertically. Then I got a ride in the cab of Bell's beast, which was a real mock-up, at least. In each seat was an HTC Vive, and after putting one on, I was soon taking a virtual ride over the skyline to the local airport.

While in flight, the simulation had a few sample user experiences, showing what it would be like to get news highlights, view a map, take a FaceTime call, and a couple of other things. In a few minutes, the aircraft landed at a dedicated heliport at the airport, and showed a message that I had saved 45 minutes over taking a car.

Optimistic? Probably. Compelling? Definitely. That's probably why Uber is so interested and is partnering with Bell and others to make the vision — an affordable vision, importantly — a reality. When? Sometime if the 2020s, if we're lucky, and that's only if a host of problems are solved.

First and foremost, noise. Heliports are already a target of communities because of the noise pollution they generate, and putting dozens (if not hundreds) of more aircraft in city skies seems like a recipe for cacophony. Bell says it's well aware of this issue and is building its aircraft to be as quiet as possible. But without a real test, or even knowledge about the propulsion system, it's impossible to know.

Then there's the safety factor. To the pessimistic, every one of those passenger drones is a potential disaster waiting to happen, and it would take only one crash to ground a service, if not the entire concept. Again, Bell knows this, too, designing its craft as a "multi-failure" system, so that if one or more systems fail, others can kick in to at least prevent the worst from occurring.

To many, though, the thought of jumping across town and back in minutes instead of hours is just too great to pass up. Uber for the skies may happen sooner than we thought.

Foods for heart health to include in your diet

Heart disease can totally be prevented, as long as we do the right things and eat the right food. Exercising can help, but so can fixing up your diet, so that you kick the junk and eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. But which foods are best for your heart? Let’s take a look at the best foods for heart health.

Salmon

This oily fish is one of the best you can have if you want to get serious about your heart. It prevents clotting and helps to lower your blood pressure, which is exactly what you need if your cardiovascular health is to improve. If you eat at least two servings per week, you’ll be doing your heart and yourself a massive favour. Salmon is rich in a powerful antioxidant that is known to be good for our hearts, but it’s important to go for wild salmon if you can. Artificially-raised fish is susceptible to heavy metals and pesticides. Alternatively, if you’re really not keen on salmon you could try the likes of sardines, tuna or herring instead.

Liver

Okay, we thought we’d get this one out of the way sooner rather than later, as it’s one of those foods for heart health that cause a lot of people to go “eew. Seriously?” Yes, seriously. Liver might not be to everyone’s taste but if you can stomach it – you should totally give it a chance, because its fats are very heart friendly. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors had no problem eating liver at all and they enjoyed all the benefits that came from it. If you eat meat and care about your heart, what are you waiting for?!

It seems as though everyone is eating avocado these days, from your hipster best friend to your grandma. If you’re still not convinced, know this: Avocado is definitely one of best foods for heart health. Because it’s rich in mono saturated fat (the good kind of fat), avocado is able to reduce your LDL levels, while at the same time boosting the amount of good cholesterol you’ve got inside you. It’s easy to eat, too. Just slice an avocado up and include it with your scrambled eggs or a salad sandwich. Or, you could mash it up and enjoy it on toast or combine it with onions and coriander to make guacamole.

Olive Oil

If you want to get healthier, you’ll need to cook with the right oil. Olive oil lowers bad cholesterol in your system, which in turn minimises the risk that you might have of a heart attack, and like avocado, it’s also rich in good fats. Olive oil is popular in the Mediterranean diet, and men in Crete have been found to die less of a heart attack, than men from most other places. This is despite having high cholesterol levels, and one of the reasons for this is that they cook a lot with heart-friendly olive oil.

Dark Chocolate

Who said that best foods for heart health had to be super boring? Dark chocolate is one of your heart’s very best friends. It’s a bit indulgent but it’s oh so good for you. The reason it’s so good for you is due to its flavonoid content, which reduce blood pressure, inflammation and lower the risk of clotting, all of which are good for your heart. Dark chocolate, however, is a bit of an acquired taste. Unfortunately, its more popular sibling, white chocolate, isn’t as heart healthy.

Potatoes

Potatoes have got a bit of a bad reputation for being too starchy and white. But don’t let that put you off because, as long as you don’t deep fry them, potatoes are also one of best foods for heart health. For one thing, potatoes are rich in potassium, an essential nutrient that brings your blood pressure down and stabilises it. Secondly, potatoes are also rich in fibre, which minimises your risk of developing heart disease. So if you’re on the hunt for healthy carbs, try potatoes from now on.

Tomatoes

Sharper-looking than potatoes, luscious red tomatoes are just as good for your heart. They’re stuffed with potassium and they also contain lycopene, a key antioxidant that’s tasked with eliminating as much bad cholesterol from your system as possible. Lycopene also helps to keep your blood vessels wide open, which in turn reduces your risk of heart attack. Tomatoes are also a good option because they don’t contain much sugar and are low in calories.

Beetroot

Despite their eye-catching colour, beetroots are often overlooked in the supermarket. There’s really no good reason for this because, as well as adding something different to your dishes, beetroot also contains powerful compounds called nitrites, which once inside your body improve your flow of blood and open your vessels. As such, beetroots are able to lower your arterial stiffness and your blood pressure. Go beets!

NDC will only get 33% if elections were held today- Legon Survey

Only 33.1% of Ghanaians would vote for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) if elections were held last year according to a survey conducted by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana.

The ruling NPP on the hand, will get 52.7% if elections were held around the same time.

The survey also settled on President John Mahama as the preferred candidate for the NDC in 2020.

The survey was conducted in 250 electoral areas across the country with 50000 respondents

Speaking to media  Wednesday,  head of the Political Science department of the University of Ghana, Dr Bossman Asare disclosed that  5000 respondents were sampled in ten regions.

He further said  250 electoral areas  were selected  with 18  NDC dominated constituencies and 14 NDC.

He explained that  some of the respondents voted for the NPP due to  the introduction of some critical social policies like the Free SHS, restoration of  trainee allowances and the fight against galamsey.

“We can see that once government is working and getting things done citizens also appreciate. But of all these… the most popularly policy has to do with the Free Senior High School,” said Dr. Bossman Asare, Head Political Science Department, University of Ghana.

“Many voters indicated that they thought it was a very…very good thing and really identified with it,” he added.

We never promised 21% reduction in electricity tariffs – Energy Ministry

The Energy Ministry has denied rumours that the ministry promised a 21% reduction in electricity tariffs.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) Ghana announced in a statement prices of fuel had been hiked by 4%.

According to the statement, fuel prices that used to trade at Ghc4.490/litre for both petrol and diesel have seen an increase to 4.670 a difference of about 18p or some 4.008% increases, price per gallon per the new increases is now Ghc21.015 from the previous Ghc20.20 for both products.

However, speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Wednesday, Communication Director at the Ministry of Energy, Nana Kofi Oppong Damoah debunked the rumour and urged the Minority  in Parliament to desist from spreading lies.

According to him, no section of the budget stipulated that electricity tariffs would be reduced by 21%. He added that the budget only made mention of a new electricity pricing which stipulated a 13% reduction in average households among others.

He  explained that if the Minority seeks to engage the general public then they should do it with much credibility.

Agogo: Permanent solution to Fulani crises underway – MP

Asante-Akim North Member of Parliament (MP), Andy Appiah-Kubi,  says  the authorities are working hard to find a permanent solution to the Fulani menace in the area.

Three military officers and a policeman were shot after an exchange of fire with Fulani herdsmen at Serebuoso in Agogo in the Ashanti Region.

According to reports, they were shot from behind after responding to a distress call from a woman that her farm was being destroyed by herd of cattle. The three military officers and the policeman are members of the Operation Cowleg.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Asante-Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi stated that Fulani issue has been persistent and needs to be tackled once and for all.

According to him, there is an anti-grazing Bill ready to be presented to Parliament for approval. The Bill, which according to him, is the solution to Fulani crises, will curb among other things the indiscriminate transportation of cattle by the Fulani Herdsmen.

“The bill will take care of the destruction of properties and life by the nomadic herdsmen and their cattle,” he added.

The MP in an interview earlier accused the herdsmen of trying to bribe him with a sum of GHS100, 000  to overlook the extreme grazing of cattle which has led to the security crisis in Agogo.
