Zinedine Zidane steps down as Real Madrid coach

0

Zinidine Zidane has stepped down as Real Madrid coach days after the club's Champions League win.

Zidane has spoken to Sergio Ramos, who supports him, and has sent a message to the rest of the squad. He says he doesn’t have plans to coach next season. If anyone has earned a long lie down, it’s him.

He also mentions that he’s pretty tired, which tallies with this, as he said a few months ago: ““Being a coach is extremely tiring – more so at a club like Real Madrid, When I feel there is nothing more to give, I’ll walk away.”

Zidane has repeated the line that he thinks change is required. “Big players need change,” he says. Which is true enough.

Algeria seizes 700kg of cocaine on container ship

Algerian authorities have seized more than 700kg (1,543lb) of cocaine smuggled aboard a container ship and made 20 arrests.

The vessel was carrying frozen meat from Brazil and had previously docked in Valencia, Spain.

It was due to offload in Algeria's western port of Oran but suspicions were raised when the captain refused to dock for three days.

Acting on a tip-off, the Algerian coastguard forced the boat into port.

The drugs were then found aboard the Liberian-registered ship, the Vega Mercury, in boxes marked "halal meat".

How to use social media effectively as a musician

As the world races to go completely digital, it is important for our musicians and other members of the creative industry to do their best to use tools or mediums provided by the internet to boost their careers and fields.

When it comes to areas like interview slots for artists, music blogs, album reviews, promotional giveaways, festival submissions amongst others, the internet reigns supreme when it comes to sharing information, interacting with fans, and expressing yourself as an artist. Whether you are part of a music group or a solo performer, social media is now the most important medium artists can use to boost their careers.

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are some of the most popular platforms for musicians in addition to countless websites where artists can showcase their talents. However, there are a few dos and don’ts even though there isn’t necessarily a  single perfect way to present your music online.

There are pointers you should follow if you’re a rapper, DJ, singer and want to showcase your talent on social media. There are tons of social media platforms out there, some designed specifically with musicians in mind.

Some social media platforms definitely have much "clout" than others. Facebook, for example boasts  of a user base of nearly 2 billion people – about a quarter of the world population. At the same time, it’s also important to keep in mind that size isn’t everything. SoundCloud, for instance, is much smaller than Facebook, but it exists specifically for the purpose of sharing music, which is obviously a major benefit for musicians.

A good social media strategy is  making profiles of the most popular or relevant websites, beginning with Facebook and work your way towards the smaller websites that get less traffic.

17 Platforms for Musicians to Upload Music or Share Content

There are numerous websites where you can sell or upload your album or single, interact with fans and followers, and share the latest news about your tour schedule, band, or solo act. To help you get started, here are 17 social media platforms that have either been designed for musicians or are useful for musicians despite having more generalized user bases.

Platforms are listed in order of roughly how many users each has.

Facebook – 1.86 billion users
YouTube– 1.3 billion users
Instagram – 600 million monthly active users
Tumblr – 550 million monthly active users
LinkedIn – 467 million users
Twitter – 319 million monthly active users
Snapchat – 301 million monthly active users
SoundCloud – 175 million monthly listeners (40 million registered users)
Pinterest – 150 million monthly active users
Google+ – 111 million active users
Spotify – 50 million paid users (over 30 million tracks)
Last.fm – 44 million users (over 12 million tracks)
Musical.ly – 40 million monthly active users
Periscope – 10 million active users
ReverbNation – 3.8 million users
Bandcamp– Approximately 350,000 artists
Twitmusic – Over 50,000 registered artists. Watch out for my second article on MUSICIANS’ SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES FOR FACEBOOK, TWITTER, AND OTHER WEBSITES.

GJA condemns ‘fake’ Anas photos; wants 24-hour protection for him

0

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is calling for 24-hour protection for investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

According to a statement signed by GJA president, Affail Monney, the Association has picked up information about some life-threatening messages received by Anas.

The statement said some unidentified persons have also been tracking Anas’ office “and other locations ostensibly to harm him.

GJA also condemned persons who posted pictures of other people they claimed were Anas with his face uncovered.
The association said such an action could put the lives of persons in the pictures in danger and must be stopped immediately.

“Several pictorial images have been posted online, television and on social media. These images, which are not the real identity of Anas, tend to put the lives of other persons at risk and this must stop forthwith. The GJA finds these developments extremely disturbing and highly unfortunate.”

“We, therefore, urge the Ghana Police Service, Bureau of National Investigations and other security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, and in utmost national interest, provide a 24-hour protection for Anas and all his interests, including his family and properties. The security agencies should not allow aggrieved and disgruntled individuals to endanger the life of this patriotic citizen of Ghana, who, at a very young age, has rendered very invaluable services to the nation,” the statement added.

Bantama gang rape: Parents wail as 20-year-old jailed 7 years

0

A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 20-year-old man seven years imprisonment for defilement captured in a viral 'gang rape' video in a Bantama suburb in the Ashanti region.

Ernest Asare, sentenced to prison with hard labour, is the oldest of five actors arrested in December 2017 after a video of a teen being gang-raped went viral on social media.

The other actors who are minors and students in junior and senior high schools have been referred to a District Court for sentencing.

All of the actors were all found guilty of conspiracy to commit defilement.

The fifth convict was found guilty of an additional charge of aiding and abetting for filming the incident which later went viral on social media.

The five were arrested in January this year by the police after they allegedly had non-consensual sexual intercourse with a girl believed to be under-age.

The video of the incident that went viral on social media, showed the teenage girl pinned down on a mattress by one of her abusers while his accomplices took turns to sexually abuse her.

An assemblyman in the area caused the arrest after the video stirred up on social media.

It was believed that the suspects were all minors hence the decision of state prosecutors to pursue the case in a juvenile court and in-camera.

However, few days after the shocking incident, the Asokwa Juvenile Court where the case was being heard struck it out.

The case was transferred to the Kumasi Circuit Court based on new evidence that one of the suspects is not a minor.

Joy News' Ohemeng Tawiah reported that the state attorney quoted a law indicating that when minors commit a crime with adults, they will be tried in open court.

Non-governmental organization American Relief Center took interest in the case and offered assistance to the police. It paid for the police medical examination, transportation and an age assessment for some of the accused.

Five months after the incident, a court judgment has left the convicts and their parents grieving as their fate was determined.

Scientists create first 3D-printed human corneas

0

The future of 3D printing and medicine is coming into focus.

Scientists at Newcastle University in the UK say they've created the first 3D-printed human corneas. Using a combination of their unique "bio-ink" and cornea stem cells, they can print the corneas in under ten minutes.

If their methods gain medical approval, 3D-printed corneas could greatly benefit the millions of people in need of corneal transplants and those suffering from vision impairment due to corneal injury.

The cornea is the eye's outermost lens, protecting it from harmful matter as well as providing a majority of the eye's focusing power. Corneas are resilient, but injury can cause pain and vision impairment. The infectious eye disorder Trachoma can also affect the cornea, causing blindness.

A 2016 survey of corneal transplants globally found that only one cornea transplant was available for every 70 needed. The study's authors concluded that bioengineering could be an "essential" part of relieving this need. That's where 3D printing comes in.

The Newcastle scientists created a "bio-ink" made of the substances alginate and collagen. They mix this with human cornea stem cells. They then print the corneas in concentric circles, at which point the stem cells grow around the bio-ink.

"Many teams across the world have been chasing the ideal bio-ink to make this process feasible," study co-author Professor Che Connon said in a statement. "Our unique gel — a combination of alginate and collagen — keeps the stem cells alive whilst producing a material which is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be squeezed out the nozzle of a 3D printer."

However, the study's authors said it will likely take years for patients to actually start receiving 3D-printed corneas. This study was essentially a proof-of-concept. But a really nifty one.

'Murdered' Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko is alive

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, widely reported to have been assassinated in Kiev on Tuesday, has turned up alive at a press conference.

In an extraordinary development, the high-profile critic of the Kremlin appeared live on Ukrainian TV.

The head of Ukraine's security services told reporters the "murder" had been staged after Ukraine learned of a Russian plot to kill the journalist.

Vasyl Hrytsak said the hit was "ordered by Russian security services".

There were gasps and applause as Mr Babchenko entered the room for the press conference on Wednesday. He thanked the Ukrainian security services for saving his life.

The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement it was happy that Mr Babchenko was alive. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the staged murder was done for "propagandistic effect", Russia's Interfax news agency reported.

The journalist was reportedly found by his wife bleeding at the entrance to his block of flats, shot several times in the back, and died in an ambulance.

He apparently did not tell his wife that the murder had been staged. "Special apologies to my wife," he said at the press conference.

“It’s Time To Produce Mining Inputs Locally” – President Akufo-Addo

0

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says the time has come for mining companies operating in Ghana to begin producing locally many of the inputs they import.

According to President Akufo-Addo, a large amount of spending by mining companies leaks from the domestic economy through the importation of several tools and equipment, which Ghana has the capacity to produce.

“It is time to reverse this trend. Ghanaian entrepreneurs must be encouraged to work with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Chamber to identify opportunities in the value chain, where indigenous companies can manufacture these products locally,” he said.

He continued, “I know that mining inputs, such as caustic soda, activated carbon and grinding media, can be produced locally if businesses produce at competitive prices, in the needed quantities and the right quality. The readily available raw materials for some of the inputs mean that there is great potential for interested investors.

The mining sector, the President stressed, ought to be a captive market for Government’s 1-District-1-Factory initiative, and would help address the unemployment problem that has blighted Ghana nation for so long.

President Akufo-Addo made this known when he delivered the keynote address at the 2018 West Africa Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition at the Accra International Conference, on Wednesday, 30th May, 2018.

With the mining extractive sector no longer a large employer of labour due to the improvement in the deployment of technology and innovation, President AKufo-Addo stressed that job creation must be stimulated in an integrated manner through the value chain of the extractives sector.

The extractives sector, particularly mining, he stressed, can help rapidly to grow Ghana’s manufacturing sector.

“Government is empowering the private sector to create jobs and wealth by working closely with industry and academia to equip young professionals with the skills required to operate competitively in the sector. We are establishing a new paradigm of an integrated mining industry to propel local manufacturing,” he said.

The value chain of mining, President Akufo-Addo stressed, has huge potential for job-creation, and Government intends to tap into it to develop our economy.

“We cannot, and should not continue to be merely exporters of raw materials to other countries. I call on all players in the sector to work with us to deepen the integration of the mining sector with the non-mineral sectors of the economy,” he added.

National Assay Programme

On the need to remove all doubts and set everybody’s mind at ease regarding the volume and value of gold legitimately exported by the sector, particularly by gold producing members of the Chamber, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he was looking forward to the implementation of the National Assay Programme.

He commended the “Chamber and the mining companies for the decision to work with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), which has been appointed as the national assayer, to assay all bullion being exported out of the country for both small scale and large-scale mining companies.”

Even though the PMMC does not presently have the requisite technology to be fully operational, the President stated that the company now has a strong incentive to build their capacity and transform their operations.

“I am confident they will do so expeditiously,” he added.

Touching on streamlining the small-scale mining sector, President Akufo-Addo noted that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu, has worked on the Multi-Sectoral Mining Integrated Project (MMIP) to provide the needed framework to streamline small scale mining, and provide avenues for alternative employment for the galamseyers.
