Kwabena Yeboah: Only a miracle will save Nyantakyi

0

Veteran sports journalist Kwabena Yeboah has said only a miracle can save Ghana Football Association president, Kwasi Nyantakyi, from prosecution.

President Nana Akufo-Addo reported Mr Nyantakyi to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the police service for allegedly defrauding by false pretences and influence peddling after having been privy to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas' Number 12 undercover documentary, which captured Mr Nyantakyi allegedly using the names of the president and Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to clench investor deals.

Speaking on the exposé, Mr Yeboah told Accra-based Joy FM that: “Only a miracle will save Kwasi.”

According to the Sports Highlights host, Mr Nyantakyi’s critics seem to be happy about his troubles because he is perceived to be arrogant and power drunk.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas has scheduled 6 June 2018 to premier the undercover piece which took him over two years to put together.

Just a week ago, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako Jr., said a well-known lawyer tried bribing Anas Aremeyaw Anas to edit out scandalous findings against "a man" believed to be at the GFA, in the yet-to-be premiered Number 12 piece.

Speaking about the piece, Mr Baako Jr. told Randy Abbey on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana programme on Thursday, 17 May that: "Look, this one, this GFA one, there was an attempt to bribe him, OK".

He said: "There was an attempt because there is a lawyer – and I'm sorry I won't mention his name, of course he may know it's him, maybe he is watching us – who is close to Anas and who knew that this job was going on, and I think he went and did some 'Okro mouth', so, somebody now tries to give him money to go and give to Anas.

"The lawyer took the money and was scared to go and deliver it to Anas. So, eventually he [lawyer] had to go back to the man and say: ‘[I couldn’t deliver the bribe], take it'. But of course we have found out. He's a lawyer, very good lawyer, prominent lawyer", Mr Baako Jr. said.

On the same show, Mr Baako Jr. said the exposé will render the careers of some top people in tatters.

"It's a disaster, sometimes we are all human beings with some weaknesses here and there and I feel sorry for some because some are friends. If I had my way, perhaps, I would say: 'Leave this alone', but Anas is a different breed of animal and I have never ever in my life attempted to influen'e him. He brings it, I look at it, we can defend it, I say: ‘Proceed'. So, there are people whose careers or integrities may, perhaps, be in tatters".

MTN, Ghana’s leading telecommunications service provider, continues to perform well in service delivery.

In the latest Quality of Service test conducted and monitored by the National Communications Authority in the Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern and Western region, MTN Ghana was the only Mobile Telecom Company that met its 3G coverage obligation by covering all 120 districts monitored in the five regions and scored good and fair in voice quality with minor challenges in some areas.

To improve voice quality and to provide enhanced customer experience, MTN recently deployed High Definition (HD) Voice service which is now live on the 3G network. The HD Voice service which uses the Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) coding standard will significantly enhance customer experience and the quality of voice calls.

MTN Ghana’s implementation of HD Voice Service is a testament to the company’s responsiveness to customers’ needs. MTN Ghana remains committed to its vision of leading the delivery of a bold new digital world to its customers.

Commenting on this development, the Chief Technical Officer at MTN Ghana, Mr Mohammed Rufai said, “In today’s fast paced, tech driven world, where the internet of things is becoming the norm, where machine to human communication is central to our daily lives, the HD Voice service would allow conversation over phone to sound more natural and clearer”. “The innovative service would also give computer-based processes like voice recognition the advantage of more accuracy”. He added.

At the beginning of year 2018, MTN Ghana earmarked USD 144M to be invested into the network.

MTN remains committed to providing distinct customer experience. MTN Ghana has invested over USD$3.615 billion into the network and Information Technology. MTN has the widest network coverage across Ghana. With the commercial launch of 4G LTE services, MTN became the only mobile operator providing 4G services in all regional capitals and large cities. A Plus: Akufo-Addo can’t be bribed, but his appointees are cheap like ‘kelewele’

Controversial A plus has vouched for the integrity of President Nana Akufo-Addo, saying the first gentleman of the land cannot  be bribed .

The musician who shared his thoughts on the latest scandal involving the GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi on his Facebook page Wednesday, said the president is rather being let down by many of his appointees are who cheap like ‘kelewele.’

“You cannot bribe Nana Addo. How dare you!!! As for his people, most of them are as cheap as kelewele and greedy,” A Plus stated.
Read his full post”

Kwasi Nyantakyi is only being sacrificed to cover up the 89/178 million dollars GVGKelni stinking scandal. Just about a year ago I accused Asenso of being corrupt. Hon. Kennedy Agyapong is said to have also accused Uslar Owusu of being corrupt and accused alledged that people are charged huge sums of money before allowed to see the president. We were both invited by the CID. A year on, Imani Ghana is asking the same Uslar Owusu to resign because of some shady deals at the communication ministry and NCA. It is even suspected that this dodge deal is the reason why a board member has resigned and many who do not want to be implicated in anyway will follow.

It is also being reported that Kwasi Nyantakyi asked people to go and bribe the same Asenso so that he reminds the president of their deal. Out of 27 million people in Ghana you think it's only Nyantakyi who knows how "cheap" Ghana is and who to bribe? We are only hearing about this one that has backfired. It is possible that some have gone through that we don't know of?

It is even possible that they went and paid. Who knows? Kwasi Nyantakyi according to reports financed Nana Addo's campaign. He knows who he dealt with. He knows How It is done. That is why he is said to have told them what to do. The fact of the matter is that 90% of his campaign donations if any wouldn't get to Akuffo Addo. Somebody chopped it.

The alledged corruption didn't begin at the flagstaff house, it begun before they won power. Kwasi Nyantakyi was in the house most of the time. He knows them. The five million, if not paid already, I suspect would have been paid to someone at the office of the president to be given to him which would have never gotten to him. You can not bribe Nana Addo. How dare you!!! As for his people, most of them are as cheap as kelewele and greedy. They dey chop pass the old man ein back nyafunyafu. Money just dey call them for their brain like trotro wey e dey run suhum Nsawam, Suhum Nsawam, mɔ kɔ Takwa, mɔ kɔ Takwa, suhum Nsawam, Suhum Nsawam.

Nana let me give you a hint. Do you know that some of you appointees are spending as much as hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (one billion old Ghana cedis) on airline tickets to a single destination and back? Plane ticket from Ghana to say korea and back back alone cost hundred thousand Ghana Cedis. Just the plane ticket. We are really protecting the public purse!!!!  ? ? ? ? ? ?

Collective responsibility needed to eradicate extreme poverty – Otiko

0

By 2030, all countries including Ghana are supposed to have achieved the 17 Sustainable Development Goals ranging from eradicating poverty in all forms to quality education, clean water and sanitation to partnerships for the goals and their 169 targets.

Ghana has over the years strove in her efforts to achieve these goals particularly the SDG 1 being eradicating poverty in all forms. For instance, in the last two decades, poverty has been reduced from 52.6% to 21.4%.

Similarly, extreme poverty has also been reduced from 37.6% from 1991 to 9.6% in 2013. That notwithstanding, Ghana’s realization of the 17 SDGs is far-fetched as data from the Ghana Statistical Service have it that about 2.2 million Ghanaians are extremely poor.

And in a National Social Protection Dialogue to discuss how Ghana National Households Registry (GNHR) data could be used to effectively target extreme poor and poor households for social interventions in Ghana, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), Otiko Afisa Djaba emphasized the need to collectively eradication poverty.

She also commended the Ghana National Households Registry for enumerating and completing a register on all extreme poor and vulnerable households in the Upper West Region and has just completed data collection also in the Upper East Region.

In June 2016, 135,000 households were enumerated and registered in the Upper West Region whilst 185,000 households were registered in the Upper East.                   Meanwhile, some cardinal issues revealed by GNHR data collection were that 64% of households in the Upper West Region are extremely poor, 18.5% are poor and 17.5% are non-poor.

Speaking to Atinka News’ Patrick Ofoe Nudzi, Ag. National Coordinator, Ghana National Household Registry, Dr. Prosper Laari, mentioned that per their data only 23,990 representing 17.4% of the total households.

It seems the fight against open defecation is becoming a hard nut to crack as 90,694 households representing about 66% of the 135,000 households enumerated in the Upper East Region have no toilet facilities, the data revealed.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has  clarified that  it does not have the authority to approve or reject  the controversial $98 million revenue monitoring and SIM Box fraud-fighting deal between the Government of Ghana and Haitian  company KelniGVG.

The NCA’s statement follows claims by IMANI Africa President, Franklin Cudjoe  that members  of the  NCA board will resign  if the controversial deal goes through .

"Let's pay more attention to Pre-Eclampsia in pregnant women" – First Lady

0

The First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has called for increased awareness and action towards making pre-eclampsia a topical health issue that requires critical attention.

Startling figures revealed by the First Lady  show  that in some regions in Ghana, notably Greater Accra and Central, Pre-Eclampsia is the leading cause of maternal deaths.

According to her, with the global numbers saying “830 women die from pregnancy and childbirths related causes each day ”, and Pre-eclampsia coming a close second to post-delivery bleeding, the trend is not soothing to the ear.

She said whilst these deaths are preventable, essential medicines and tools  needed to treat the disorder, are often unavailable in our context.

The First Lady was speaking at the launch of the World Pre-eclampsia Day, on the theme, “Pre-eclampsia Be Prepared Before Lightning Strikes” at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

Explaining what this deadly yet silent killer is based on expert counsel, Mrs. Akufo-Addo stated that “Pre –eclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to organs, most often the liver and kidneys. Preeclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women, whose blood pressure had previously been normal".

“For the purposes of illustration let’s say a woman, Yaa Mansa, has the condition during pregnancy. Yaa whose blood pressure had been previously normal, will exhibit pregnancy induced high blood pressure. A test will show protein in her urine and she will have swollen feet that depress when pressure is applied. According to the professionals, this may imply that Yaa’s liver and kidneys may be affected. Yaa Mansa’s Pre-eclampsia would normally begin in the second half of pregnancy after 20 weeks. For a woman like Yaa with no previous hypertension, even a slight rise in blood pressure may be a sign of pre-eclampsia.” She explained thoroughly.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo, stressed that other symptoms may include nausea or vomiting, decreased urine output and shortness of breath, caused by fluid in the lungs as well as severe headaches, changes in vision and upper abdominal pain, usually under the ribs on the right side.

She was, however, quick to add that pre-eclampsia sometimes develops without any symptoms.

Touching on the risk factors involved, the First Lady said, a woman is at a higher risk, if she has a personal or family history of pre-eclampsia or has chronic hypertension and that the risk is also higher with a first pregnancy or if a woman is pregnant with her second or third child with a new partner.

“An obese woman, a woman carrying two or more fetuses, or carrying an in -vitro pregnancy, also has a higher risk of getting pre-eclampsia”. She mentioned.

She assured that, explaining the risk factors was not to frighten anyone but to ensure that knowledge allows  women take the necessary steps to stay well and alive.

Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, who is also the founder and Head of the Rebecca Foundation advised pregnant mothers to consistently seek ante-natal care and entreated  health workers, to intensify the education on pre-eclampsia and other conditions that lead to the current unacceptable rate of maternal deaths in Ghana.

Bawumia launches Ghana’s first Criminal Justice Case Tracking System

An electronic system to assist Ghana’s justice delivery system to keep track of all the disparate activities of the various stakeholders has been launched in Accra by the Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Known as the Criminal Justice Case Tracking System (Ghana CTS), it is designed to collect, collate and harmonise data from the Ghana Police Service, Prisons Service, the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Legal Aid Scheme and the Judicial Service in order to provide systemic and timely information to all stakeholders, from the arrest or receipt of complaint, through investigation, charging, prosecution, trial and punishment.

The execution of the project has the potential to generate immense benefits for the country in seeking to fulfill the ends of criminal law which is essential to promote peace, security and order within the society.

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Accra on Tuesday 22nd May, 2018, which was also attended by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Hon Gloria Akuffo, the Chief Justice, Ms Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo, and the United States Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Robert P Jackson, Vice President Bawumia underscored the importance of a timely and efficient judicial system for the development of any nation.

“Timeliness and efficiency are essential to the survival of a modern state. For peace to be maintained among citizens, for our collective sense that we live in a good society, citizens must have reasonable faith that the courts are able to dispense justice impartially, speedily, and efficiently.

“For investors to have confidence in an economy, they must be certain that commercial disputes will be fairly and efficiently adjudicated. In sum, for the modern state, justice delayed or miscarried is the surest formula or recipe for chaos and disorderliness.

“An efficient justice system is a priceless public good” the Vice President emphasised.

Vice President Bawumia bemoaned the many bottlenecks in the justice delivery system, which creates a fertile ground for corruption and the perversion of justice, and called for high stakes buy-in from the leaders of the justice delivery system to ensure its success.

“…the capacity to track the location and status of cases has been a major problem. This, many will argue, create fertile grounds for corruption by certain individuals in each of the key steps in the justice chain. The result has been undue delays, loss of files, among others, and subsequent clogging of the criminal justice delivery system by excessive court caseloads and backlogs.

“I am informed that these challenges in turn, sadly, have led to many remand prisoners suffering from long periods behind bars before they can have their day in court. This can only exacerbate prison overcrowding which all decent citizens agree to be inhumane.”

“(But) with the activation of this Project, there will be clear and accountable tracking of cases from initiation right through to judgment,” the Vice President continued. “Users of the system will be able to assign activities and track the execution of those activities.

“This will enable the various stakeholders to keep case processing on track by identifying delays in individual cases and bringing to light major bottlenecks in the system.”

As well, the system will provide management of the various key sector agencies the required tools to track progress of cases, monitor the overall performance of the actors within the criminal justice sector and appropriately allocate resources, with a view to improving performance standards.

Vice President Bawumia pledged Government’s support for its success, indicating that the Case-tracking System gives further impetus to the push to place ICT at the heart of the governance and economic processes.

“We remain firmly committed to the success of this project and I can assure you that the government of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will do all in its power to ensure its success and sustainability.

“A Ghana where systems work, efficiently and effectively, to support the activities of law abiding citizens is the Ghana that we want, and the Ghana we must all work diligently to make a reality for the future.”

Gov’t clears over GHC285m School Feeding debt

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Otiko Afisah Djaba, has disclosed that all indebtedness to caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme from 2015 to the end of 2017 totaling GHC285, 304,109.00 has been settled.

Speaking at the Meet- the- Press series in Accra Tuesday, the Minister said her Ministry was able to achieve most of its set objectives for the year 2017.
The former caterers have on several occasions embarked on demonstrations to demand for the full payment of arrears owed them by government for services rendered in 2015 to 2017 academic year after their contracts ended in July 2017.

The sector minister was emphatic that all the arrears owed the caterers have been settled.

Madam Djaba stated her Ministry in 2017 conducted all the six (6) bi-monthly nationwide LEAP payments to extreme poor households and that more than 213,064 extreme poor households in 6,594 communities nationwide are currently benefiting from LEAP.

"The Social Protection Directorate was able to re-launch the Social Protection Inter-Sectorial Technical Committee and Registration of Prison inmates onto the National Health Insurance Scheme, validate the SP Implementation Plan, develop a draft Monitoring and Evaluation Framework that is earmarked for completion this year and the launching of the ‘Helpline of Hope’ call center which comprises a Unified Case Management System providing a single platform for citizens to log and monitor grievances, as well as to disseminate relevant information on behalf of the major SP programs.”

Madam Djaba said the measures put in place by the Ministry  will address the growth of the vulnerable in societies in terms of their socio-economic development. She observed that there are several policies in Ghana but the implementation of those policies becomes a challenge," she stated.

The minister said the development of the Children’s Act, Gender Policy, Social Protection Policy will not be enough if they are not meaningful to the lives of these vulnerable people.

She, therefore, charged Ghanaians to ensure that social protection becomes a tool for formalizing the informal sector where poorest and vulnerable people are as well as a tool for addressing the progress of rural development.
