“Come and show us the 121 CHIPS compounds” – Asomah Kyeremeh tells Mahama

0

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Asomah Kyeremeh, has refuted claims that the erstwhile NDC administration has provided and equipped about 121 Community Health Improvement Services (CHIPS) compounds in the Brong Ahafo Region.

In 2013, John Dramani Mahama who was the then the President introduced a 10% cut in the salaries of  some government officials  to support health care delivery, especially in rural areas, and challenged others to follow  suit.

He said if all public sector employees followed the example and gave just two per cent of their salaries to build Community Health Improvement Services (CHPS) compounds, government would be able to build 2,000 CHIPS compounds across the country.

However, speaking to Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Asumah Kyeremeh, stated that the the region cannot locate any of the 121 CHPS compounds built by the NDC.

According to the regional minister, the NDC left uncompleted CHIPS compounds which was completed by the NPP.

“We do not have any records pointing to the fact that the NDC built and equipped about 121 CHIPS compounds here in the Brong Ahafo Region”, he said.

He urged the NDC to inculcate the habit of  speaking the real truth and desist from lies.

IMF urges Ghana to reduce debt stock

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is urging government to work to further reduce the country’s debt.

While commending the managers of the economy for reducing the debt to GDP rate to 60 percent as at February 2018, the Country Director of IMF Natalia Koliadina said the country’s public debt was still significant.

Speaking on a panel at the Third CEO Summit in Accra, Madam Koliadina said Ghana beyond Aid would be difficult to achieve if Ghana’s debt stock is not controlled effectively.

“Last year was the first time that the government was able to record a primary surplus. The surplus allowed debt to GDP ratio to decline, so now debt is on a declining path. This is a major achievement, but of course it did not come without its cost. This recovery process is only the beginning for Ghana because much more needs to be done. And the focus now is on making sure that macro-economic stability is continued and maintained in the future outside the IMF supported programs.”

THE 3RD CEO SUMMIT

The 2-day summit which is being held on May 21 and 22, 2018 will serve as the biggest gathering of Ghana’s CEO’s.

This year’s summit under the theme “Leadership, Innovation and Investment for Business and Economic Transformation”, was organized under the distinguished patronage of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The 2-day summit will be used to address critical issues affecting Ghana’s private sector through presentations by international experts such as Roger Harrop (International Speaker) as well as high-level panel discussions on topics such as “Growth in Ghana: Rising or Falling”, “Evolving Trends in Governance and Board Leadership”, “What does the fourth industrial revolution mean to Ghana” among others.

The 3rd Ghana CEO Summit is a platform which provides an opportunity for CEO’s and other business leaders to meet, network and form partnerships for growth.

The CEO’s Summit since it begun has played host to more than 1200 attendees from about 1,000 participating organizations.

The 3rd Ghana CEO Summit is organized by the Chief Executives Network Ghana Limited in partnership with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC)

and Deloitte.

JM legacy: Stop feigning ignorance- Mahama tells Akufo -Addo

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama is accusing President Akufo-Addo of feigning ignorance of the many developmental projects carried out by his (Mahama) administration.

According to the former president, his government improved the health, education, roads, water, rural electrification amongst others.

Mr. Mahama’s statement was a hit-back at a statement made by President Akufo-Addo in his recent tour of the Brong Ahafo Region. The president alleged that many of the former government’s projects in the region are “ghost projects.”

The statement further spelt out Mr Mahama’s achievements in the Brong Ahafo region, calling them visible investments.

Read full statement below:

STATEMENT IN REACTION TO PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO’S GHOST PROJECTS COMMENT

The attention of the Office of HE John Dramani Mahama has been drawn to the false comments made by President Nana Akufo-Addo to the effect that the unprecedented capital investments made by the Mahama administration cannot be seen and are “ghost projects”.

It is regrettable that President Akufo-Addo has yet again failed to exhibit candour in his speech, this time to the Chiefs and people of Nkoranza in Brong Ahafo Region. It is even more worrying when there is overwhelming evidence of the massive investment made in the provision of various projects for the people of Ghana.

Mr. Mahama, who remains grateful to the people of this country for the opportunity to serve them, is gratified that he was able to provide tangible development in all sectors that enhanced the quality of life of Ghanaians.

The least President Akufo-Addo must do is to add to his predecessor’s significant gains instead of rolling back the clock of socio-economic transformation. After seventeen months in office, what the people want to see are the projects initiated or started by the President since he was sworn into office.

In the Brong Ahafo Region, for instance, the region had its fair share of development, which can be honestly attested to by the chiefs and people of the Region. How the President can say these are ghost projects is surprising.

For the benefit of the President, I wish to provide below, a list of some projects undertaken by the John Dramani Mahama administration between 2013 and 2016 in the Brong Ahafo Region.

ROADS SECTOR

1. Dormaa Ahenkro- Nkrankwanta road

2. Dormaa Ahenkro Town roads

3. Dormaa Ahenkro- Babianiha roads

4. Babianiha- Antwirifo roads

5. Nkoranza Town roads

6. Nkoranza- Jema Road

7. Wenchi Town roads

8. Techiman Town roads

9. Techiman- Offuman roads

10. Sunyani Town roads

11. Jema-Amoma-Anyima road

12. Nkoranza – Busunya road

13. Goaso-Akyerensua road

14. Mmahame Junction – Dadiesoaba road

15. Dadiesoaba – Siechem road

16. Sunyani Senior High School roads.

In addition to the above, the following road projects had been awarded and were under construction at the time the NDC left office in January 2017.

1. Kintampo Town roads

2. Jema Town roads

3. Atebubu-Kwame-Danso roads

4. Sankore – Nobekwa road

5. Bechem Town roads.

HEALTH SECTOR

As part of efforts to bring healthcare to the doorstep of the people of the Brong Ahafo region, the John Mahama administration constructed, equipped and operationalized five (5) polyclinics at Techimantia, Kwatire, Bomaa, Wamfie and Nkrankwanta.

The TAIN District Hospital at Nsawkaw, started by the same government, was about 75% complete at the time the NDC exited office.

A total of one hundred and twenty-one (121) CHPS Compounds were also constructed across the region. The region also benefitted from the National Hospital Equipment Replacement Programme under which modern health equipment were installed in all public hospitals.

EDUCATION SECTOR

We wish to remind President Akufo-Addo that it was the Mills and Mahama administration that established the first Public University in the history of the Brong Ahafo Region, the University of Energy and Natural Resources- UNER, which today has a student population of more than three thousand (3000).

The Mahama administration also established the Dormaa satellite campus of the UNER and provided many transformative facilities on the main Sunyani Campus of the University.

The following Health Training Institutions were established in the region- Sampa Nursing Training School, Techiman Nursing Training School, Yamfo College of Health, Dadiesoaba Nursing Training School, Seikwa Nursing Training School, Kwapong Nursing Training School and Goaso Midwifery School.

To further expand educational facilities and opportunities in the region, the following projects were undertaken:

1. Construction of fifteen (15) Community Day Senior High Schools (Danyame, Techimantia, Techiman, Kasapin, Duadaso, Kintampo, Awrowa amoing others)

2. The absorption and enhancement of 16 other Community Secondary Schools in the region e.g. Sankore Senior High School.

3. Establishment of a satellite campus in Techiman for the University of Education Winneba.

4. Expansion of the Nkoranza Technical Institute by constructing eleven (11) new structures for the Institute.

5. Construction of over two hundred and forty (240) six-unit classroom blocks for basic schools in the region. These projects were all at different stages of completion as at January 2017.

Additionally, the NDC Government constructed educational facilities ranging from dormitories, classroom blocks and administration blocks in almost every Public Senior High School in the region.

WATER SECTOR

To ensure access to potable water in order to ensure good health and enhance productivity, President Mahama provided the Brong Ahafo region with the following:

1. Berekum Water project- this project will supply the people of Berekum and its environs with water till the year 2050

2. Construction of 23 Community Small Town Water projects across the Region

3. 1,446 Boreholes and 71 solar-powered boreholes across the region

4. Expansion of Bechem and Duayawkwanta water facilities.

RURAL ELECTRIFICATION

Under the leadership of President John Mahama, over seven hundred (700) communities in the region were added to the national grid. These communities included Danyame, Nsesreso, Antwirifo, communities in the Nkrankwanta District and eighty (80) communities in the Kintampo Municipality among others.

Let me place on record that the above list is by no means exhaustive. It is therefore inexplicable how any citizen of Ghana would purport not to be aware of these visible investments much less the President of Ghana, who should and can assess information about all these very easily.

Even as we remain convinced that an unwholesome political motive may have informed the President feigning ignorance, we wish to encourage him to use the opportunity offered by these tours, to explain to the people of Ghana why they should continue to repose confidence in him after having disappointed them through his failure to honour many campaign promises.

We note, sadly, that owing to this failure, President Akufo-Addo is touring the country empty handed with little or nothing to show for his stewardship so far. As a consequence, he has resorted to making more promises on his regional tours after seventeen months in office.

The much awaited campaign promises of ‘one District, one factory’, ‘one village, one dam’, ‘one million dollars for each constituency every year’ are yet to to materialize.

Also conspicuously missing on the President’s agenda in the Brong Ahafo Region was a tangible update on efforts to make good his promise to pay victims of the micro-finance scams that became a subject of his campaign in 2016.

Mahama’s "ghost roads” response mockery of the century – Asomah Kyeremeh

0

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwaku Asomah Kyeremeh, has described former President John Dramani Mahama’s ”ghost project” response as a mockery of the century.

President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, alleged that  projects  initiated  in the  Region by  the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government especially roads are nowhere to be found.

President Mahama during the 2016 electioneering campaign, accused Nana Addo, then presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party), of not seeing the ‘rehabilitated roads because he was sleeping as he travelled to do his campaign throughout the country.

In response to the President’s statement, a press release from the office of the former President expressed displeasure in the statement.

According to the statement, it is regrettable that President Akufo-Addo has yet again failed to exhibit candour in his speech, this time to the Chiefs and people of Nkoranza in Brong Ahafo Region. It is even more worrying when there is overwhelming evidence of the massive investment made in the provision of various projects for the people of Ghana.

However, in an interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive Tuesday, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Asumah Kyeremeh described the Presidents response as a mockery of the century adding that there is enough evidence to prove that the projects are indeed ghost projects.

According to him, President Mahama and the NDC government should even be grateful to President Akufo Addo and his team for completing projects started by the NPP.

“Nana Akufo Addo understands the philosophy of continuing projects started by  previous governments. We can list projects that the NDC government abandoned when they took power from the then Kufuor administration in 2009 till we came back to power”, he said.

Freddie Blay: I’m still in the race

0

Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has rejected claims that he is no longer interested in his party’s chairmanship race.
Reports were rife Monday night that Mr. Blay had chickened out of the chairmanship race in support of Alhaji Short, another contender.

However, a press statement issued by Mr. Blay’s office Tuesday denied the reports.

“Let me forcefully state without any shred of doubt that no such statement has been issued by Chairman Blay or any of his campaign coordinators. Chairman Freddie Blay has not stepped out of the race as it is being alleged. In fact, he is the candidate to beat in this race and not the other way round,” Sylvester Tetteh, Campaign Manager for Freddie Blay said.

Below is the full statement:

Below is the full statement:
Our attention has been drawn to a publication making rounds purported to ferry into the minds of the good people of the New Patriotic Party and our delegates that Chairman Freddie Blay has stepped down and is no longer vying for the National Chairmanship slot of the party scheduled for July 2018 at Koforidua.

The statement also seems to create the impression that the decision to bow out of the race is hinged on some voodoo research that appears to suggest that Chairman Freddie Blay’s decision is attributed to the fact that he cannot win this race and has therefore decided to throw his weight behind Mr. Stephen Ntim.

Let me forcefully state without any shred of doubt that no such statement has been issued by Chairman Blay or any of his campaign coordinators. Chairman Freddie Blay has not stepped out of the race as it is being alleged. In fact, he is the candidate to beat in this race and not the other way round.

We are by this statement dispelling this malicious rumour which has clearly been orchestrated by his detractors and opponents who cannot cope with the reality that Mr. Blay has won this race and would wish to mischievously create this misconception. Obviously pained by the fact that this race is a foregone conclusion, such a statement has been crafted to pollute the atmosphere.

This, we believe, is coming from the camp of the obvious loser in this contest. We, therefore, urge all and sundry to disregard this fabricated story and treat it with the sort of disdain it deserves. We are focused on our agenda to ensure that Chairman Freddie Blay emerges victorious when the election is held. Thank you!

An Accra circuit court has remanded General Lance Corporal for allegedly defrauding an auditor and an accountant under the pretext of securing them plots of land.

Gabriel Teye Nartey pleaded not guilty and is to re-appear on June 4.

Police Chief Inspector Maxwell Oppong told the Court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Essandoh that the prosecution witnesses; Samuel Lincoln Terkper, auditor and Patrick Amoako, accountant, are residents of Tabora and Agbogba respectively in the Greater Accra region.

Nartey is a Police officer, stationed at the Dansoman Motor Traffic and Transport Department also in Accra.

The Prosecution said between March and April, 2017, Terpker met Nartey at Adenta and introduced himself as a policeman who deals in plots of land.

Terkper expressed interest and Nartey sold a piece of land to him at GH¢28,000.00.

Amoako was also introduced to Nartey and later he also bought a plot of land at GH¢35,000.00 and gave a cashdown of GH¢20,000.00, in addition to a Peugeot saloon car valued GH¢15,000.00 for the payment.

The Prosecution said after taking the money, Nartey failed to produce them with the papers covering the lands and went into hiding.

Terkper and Amoako visited the said lands but were shocked to know that the lands do not belong to Nartey.

Terkper, who made checks with the Land Commission, discovered that the said land belonged to one Pearl Aku Atiemo.

On May 16, this year, the two went to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters to lodge a formal complaint and Nartey was arrested.

Chief Inspector Oppong said, Nartey admitted the offence in his caution statement and added that he had also bought it from one he only named as Eric and Akpor Mensah but could not produce documents to prove his case neither was he able to lead police to them.

African migrants rescued off Brazil after 35 days at sea

Twenty-five African migrants have been rescued off the coast of Brazil after 35 days at sea, officials and local media say.

The migrants, all men from Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal, were travelling on a boat with two Brazilians, the navy said in a statement.

It said that there was no immediate indication about the route they took but officials said that the boat was flying an Haitian flag.

Local fishermen found the boat drifting off the town of Sao Jose de Ribamar, south of the Amazon river, on Saturday, the navy said.

They then towed it ashore and gave food and medicine to the occupants before they were processed by the police, the Maranhao human rights department said.

Brazilian officials said the group would be put into temporary housing by the state as the police investigate if crimes against them were committed in relation to their arrival in the country.

Brazil is seen as an 'El Dorado' for international migrants, especially those from West Africa.

“Help indigenous banks grow and survive” – Akufo-Addo to BoG

0

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has charged the Bank of Ghana to help indigenous banks to grow and survive, as part of the ongoing reform of the banking sector being undertaken by the Central Bank.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the viability of the banking and financial sectors is critical in any nation’s quest for rapid economic development and investment growth, adding that a nation’s economic fortune is often as good as its banking system and the confidence in its monetary environment.

That is why recent scenes in the banking sector, the President noted, has been a cause of worry for many Ghanaians, and was, thus, relieved that the Bank of Ghana is tightening up its regulatory and oversight activities on banks.

“We cannot afford instability or recklessness in the banking and financial sectors. For any loss of confidence in the banks is bound to have a ripple effect on the stability of the economy as a whole,” he bemoaned.

He thus urged all Ghanaians to allow the regulator, which is the Central Bank, to deal with these matters and restore sanity and confidence.

“It is in all our interests that all financial matters are dealt with professionally and without political interference, no matter how tempting. Nonetheless, it is important that the regulator recognises that a banking sector dominated by foreign-owned banks does not bode well for the Ghana Beyond Aid project,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He continued, “It is essential that indigenous banks grow and survive in any meaningful reform of the banking system. I am confident that the regulator, the Bank of Ghana, appreciates this.”

President Akufo-Addo made this known on Monday, 21st May, 2018, he delivered an address at the 3rd Ghana CEO Summit, held at the Kempinski Hotel, on the theme “Leadership, Innovation and Investment for Business and Economic Transformation.”

Help create jobs

Describing widespread youth unemployment as the greatest threat to the country’s democracy and its stability, President Akufo-Addo stated that Ghana must develop an economy in which sustainable jobs are created to absorb the youth that enter the job market every year.

“Real, sustainable jobs are created by the private sector, and I urge you to partner the government and take advantage of the opportunities that are coming up. The ‘One District One Factory’ Initiative is one that has been subjected to intense preparation and provides great opportunities,” he said.

Despite Government leading this effort, President Akufo-Addo was hopeful that the private sector will rise to the occasion, identify niche areas, and establish viable industrial concerns in the districts.

This, he said, is the way Ghana can build her own Samsungs, Kawasakis, Suzukis and Hyundais.

“This model of ‘One District One Factory’ is a necessity of our time, and a key strategy towards the eradication of poverty and the creation of employment around the country. I urge you to take advantage of the various incentives that have been put in place, and help make a success of the programme,” he said.

Zambia mothers refuse treatment by male midwife

Expectant mothers at a health centre in central Zambia are refusing to have their babies delivered by a male nurse – leading to fears they may start taking matters into their own hands.

The privately owned Daily Nation newspaper reports the mothers at Kalwa Health Centre, in the farming-rich town of Mkushi town, feel uncomfortable with their babies being delivered by a person of the opposite sex.

Some mothers said they considered it a taboo and against traditional practice for their babies to be delivered by a male nurse and not a female one.

A health official has urged the government to immediately address the issue before mothers resort to delivering their babies from home.

“The situation is not good,” Happison Kapengwehe, Kalwa Health Centre neighbourhood health committee chairperson, warned.

Zambia's health facilities and personnel are often inadequate, with a rise in a population in areas far from the capital, Lusaka, being the most affected.

The BBC tried to contact the country’s health minister, Dr Chitalu Chilufya, but he could not be reached as he is currently in Geneva, Switzerland, attending a conference.
