"I'm not worried about Mahama’s declaration" – Sylvester Mensah

0

National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer hopeful, Sylvester Mensah, says former President John Mahama’s decision to contest the party’s flagbearer position will not change his stance.

Former President John Dramani Mahama stated that he had heeded to calls from “the teeming supporters and sympathizers” of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest the 2020 elections.

The former president made the comment on his Facebook page Saturday. Mr. Mahama’s definite statement on his political future follows the party’s series of “Unity Walks” across the country.

In an interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, Sylvester Mensah welcomed the former President to the contest, adding that his declaration is his democratic right.

According to him, the former President’s comeback was common knowledge and that people were even expecting the declaration earlier.

“Every Ghanaian knew that he eventually will declare his intention to contest, perhaps it has taken too long for him to have declared his intention”, he said.

Asked if he would consider rescinding his decision to contest the NDC flagbearer position and join John Mahama as his running mate, Sylvester Mensah stated that at 54 years, he is politically mature to win the flagbearer position and lead the NDC to victory come 2020.

FIFA bans Samuel Inkoom for refusing to pay agent $65,000

0

Ghana’s defender, Samuel Inkoom, has been slapped  with another one-year ban by FIFA for disobeying a court order.

Inkoom defaulted  in paying an agent he cheated in a transfer deal in 2014 and this has since caused his career to tumble after moving to FC Basel.

In June 2017, the 29-year-old former Asante Kotoko player was instructed to either pay Curtis Willet a sum of $65,000 or serve a one-year ban. The former however failed to pay the money, thus the ban.

We’re delivering on our promises –Bawumia

The government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has delivered and will continue to deliver on the promises it made to Ghanaians when they sought their mandate in the 2016 elections, Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged.

According to Dr Bawumia, the Nana Akufo-Addo ticket has fulfilled a large portion of the social contract it signed with the Ghanaian people after 16 months in office, and the government is working assiduously to ensure the fulfilment of the remainder to ensure improvements in the wellbeing of ordinary citizens.

“We made a number of promises to Ghanaians, and we are working day and night to fulfil them. Some of them we have already fulfilled. For instance, we promised Free Senior High School Education and true to our word, we have started. Today, finance is no longer a barrier to access to education for Junior High School graduates. That is a great burden lifted off the shoulders of parents by Nana Akufo-Addo’s government.”

The Vice President, who enumerated a number of fulfilled promises at various events in the Volta Region on Saturday 19th May, 2018, said the government is on course to meet its part of the social contract.

Speaking at the Aflao, Ho and Hohoe Central Mosques, Vice President Bawumia said true to its word, the Akufo-Addo Government has restored Teacher and Nursing trainee allowances and implemented a programme to improve agricultural production through the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, as well as other pledges.

“We promised to pay closer attention to the developmental needs of the Zongos, and for the first time in the history of Ghana, President Nana Akufo-Addo has not only appointed a Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development Affairs, but has set up a Zongo Development Fund and set aside budgetary allocation of Ghs100 million for it. Just last week we appointed a CEO and his two Deputies to run the Zongo Development Fund. This is evidence that when we make a promise we keep it,” Alhaji Dr Bawumia emphasised.

“To tackle graduate unemployment, we have set up the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), and this year, we will engage 100,000 of our youth and help equip them with useful skills and experience,” Dr Bawumia continued.

“I am sure you can all see that your light bills have reduced, because we have fulfilled the promise to reduce them. Tariffs for industry have been reduced by about 30%, while households are enjoying almost 18% reduction. One Village One Dam is on course. We gave our word, and we have done it.”

Government is also keen to see improvements in infrastructure, and the ongoing efforts would soon yield manifest benefits, the Vice President pledged.

Vice President Bawumia was in the Volta Region on the first leg of a nationwide Ramadan tour to pray with his Moslem brethren and seek Allah’s blessing for the nation. He will also offer special prayers for the sustenance and enhancement of the peace Ghana continues to enjoy in spite of the multiplicity of religious faiths in the country.

While in the region, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia paid courtesy calls on the Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area, Togbi Amenya Fiti IV, and Togbega Gabusu VI, Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional State. He was accompanied by the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibold Yao Letsa; Mr John Peter Amewu, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources; Hon Boniface Abubakar Saddique, Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development Affairs, and other government officials.

The Vice President will visit the Eastern Region in the second leg of the Ramadan tour on Sunday 20th May, 2018.

“We are receiving our share of development” – Ahafo Chiefs to Akufo-Addo

0

The Chiefs of Ahafo, in the Brong Ahafo Region, have expressed their appreciation to the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his administration for the level of development they have witnessed since January 7, 2017.

The President of the Ahafo Traditional Council, Nana Ansah Adu Baah, Chief of Yamfo, on behalf of the Council, told President Akufo-Addo that despite being in office for 16 months, the President’s achievements have been overwhelming.

“Because of the policies you (President Akufo-Addo) have put in place, anyone can now say confidently that I am Ghanaian. When people state that they have not seen anything, we, in Ahafo, can boldly state that we have seen a lot,” Nana Ansah Adu Baah said.

The President of the Ahafo Traditional Council made this known on Saturday, 19th May, 2018, at Goaso, in Asunafo North constituency, when President Akufo-Addo met with “the Council of Zone B Chiefs”, on day two of President Akufo-Addo’s tour of the Brong Ahafo Region.

Cataloguing the achievements of President Akufo-Addo’s government in Ahafo, the Yamfo Chief stated that in the Tano North district, bungalows have been constructed for the Directors of Health and Education; together with the construction of several units of classroom blocks in the district.

“In Asutifi North, newly constructed wards have been built for the District Hospital; a doctor’s residence has been built; quarters for staff of the Asutifi North District Assembly have been built; a new market has also been built; and KVIP’s with small water systems have been constructed in twelve towns in the district,” the Chief added.

Additionally, Nana Ansah Adu Baah noted that in Asutufi South, nurses’ bangalows, a boys’ dormitory and a new lecture theatre have been constructed for the Dadiesoaba Nursing Training School. A CHPS facility, he added, has also been constructed at Apotoyuwa.

In Asunafo North, the Chief stated that the Asumura Bridge has been constructed, which has ensured that residents of the town are no longer cut off from other parts of the district during the rainy season.

“A fully furnished classroom block, fitted with a staff common room and KVIP facility has been constructed by this government at the Dominase L/A Primary School. Again, 3 separate classroom units, all with staff common rooms and stores, have also been constructed at Kofimirekrom. At Sekyerekrom, new classroom blocks have been constructed, which have been fitted with staff common rooms and KVIPs. CHPS compounds and nurses quarters have also been constructed in Pomaakrom,” he added.

As though this was not enough, the Chief revealed that a new 135 room market has also been constructed at Goaso, in Asunafo North.

Nana Ansah Adu Baah added that the Akufo-Addo government has constructed, in Asunafo South, a new CHPS compound in a town called Wejakrom. A new administration block, together with a new female ward, he said, has been constructed at Kukuom Health Centre. This facility was later commissioned by President Akufo-Addo.

In Tano South, the Chief of Yamfo stated that a fully furnished 3-unit classroom block has been built at Bechem, in addition to a CHPS Compound and nurses quarters all being built in BEchem.

“All these are examples of the projects you (President Akufo-Addo) have completed within the short space of 16 months of being in office, and we are very grateful to your administration,” he said.

“My opponents will have no message by 2020” – Akufo-Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stressed that by the end of his first term of office in 2020, his political opponents would have no campaign message going into the elections, as he would have fulfilled the promises he made to the Ghanaian people in run-up to the 2016 elections.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the same people who are saying his administration has done nothing over the last 16 months in office are the same persons who, prior to the 2016 elections, stated that free SHS was not possible, and described as lies the pledge to restore the nursing and teacher trainee allowances.

“One by one we are keeping our promises. Free SHS is now a reality. In September this year, the Free SHS policy will cover new entrants, in addition to those who will then be in SHS 2. By September 2019, it will cover all students in Senior High Schools across the country. Teacher and nursing trainees are also receiving their allowances. We have also retired a large chunk of the NHIS debt left by my predecessor, and the NHIS is working,” he said

The President continued, “To those who say they are still not seeing anything, they should wait and watch me. By the end of the four years, they will have nothing to say. They will acknowledge that we came to work for the development of Ghana.”

President Akufo-Addo made this known on Saturday, 19th May, 2018, when he visited the Asutifi South, Asutifi North, Asunafo North and Asunafo South constituencies, on day 2 of his 3-day tour of the Brong Ahafo Region.

As part of his tour, President Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of an administrative block for the Asunafo South District Assembly; and inspected the newly constructed bridge for residents of Asumura in the Asunafo North constituency.

President Akufo-Addo also commissioned the newly constructed special ward at the St. Theresa’s Hospital at Hwidiem in Asutifi South; and inspected the 68-bed hospital and semi-detached maternity block, which is under construction at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North constituency.

ICT key to transforming Ghana’s economy –Bawumia

0

The Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated the Nana Akufo-Addo government’s determination to transform Ghana’s economy through the use of Information Communication Technology in all spheres of national life.

Government is thus keen to provide opportunities for Ghanaians, especially students, to acquire cutting edge knowledge in ICT to drive the digitisation agenda and improve the life of the ordinary citizen.

Vice President Bawumia assured of government’s commitment to ICT education when he met the 2017 and 2018 batches of the Huawei Ghana Seeds for the Future Programme at the Jubilee House, Accra on Friday 18th May, 2018.

Initiated in 2008, the Seeds for the Future Programme is Huawei’s most heavily invested global corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity. The programme was launched in Ghana in 2015 and 45 Ghanaian students have participated so far.

The programme seeks to develop local ICT talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote a greater understanding of and interest in the ICT sector and improve, encourage regional building and participation in the digital community, according to officials of Huawei.

The 10 students of the 2018 batch will undergo a 2 week programme in Beijing and the high-tech manufacturing hub, Shenzhen where they will study cutting-edge information and telecommunication technologies at Huawei HQ Training Centre.

Huawei will share its ICT expertise and experience in managing a multinational corporation with the young ICT professionals and help fuel the development of local ICT industries.

Outlining some ongoing ICT-based reforms being undertaken by Government, including the implementation of a paperless system at the ports, a National Digital Property Addressing System, Mobile Money Interoperability Payment System, the soon-to-be-issued National ID Card and plans to digitise all land records, Vice President Bawumia said it was important to also train the human resource to fully implement the digitisation agenda.

Vice President Bawumia expressed Government’s appreciation to Huawei and called on other companies to emulate their example of offering training to Ghanaian youth, who will make up the workforce in a few years.

In brief remarks Hon Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP), Minister for Communications; H.E. Jiang Zhouteng, Acting Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ghana; and Mr Tommy Zhou, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Ghana, urged the students to take advantage of the opportunity to not only acquire knowledge in ICT, but also imbibe the qualities that have made China a force to reckon with.
