Obasanjo tells President Buhari to retire

0

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari against seeking re-election next year.

Mr Obasanjo supported Mr Buhari's election in 2015 but now he says the president should retire because of age and ill health.

In an open letter, Mr Obasanjo says he is disappointed with Mr Buhari, particularly because of what he calls his poor handling of Nigeria's economy, the largest in Africa.

He adds that the president does not have a good understanding of Nigeria's social and economic dynamics and the country needs a younger leader.

Mr Buhari has not publicly responded to Mr Obasanjo, who wrote a similar letter to then President Goodluck Jonathan urging him not to run in 2015.

Many observers say Mr Buhari, 74, is likely to seek a second term but so far he has not said he would do so.

Mr Obasanjo ruled Nigeria twice, in the 1970s as a military ruler and from 1999 to 2007 as a civilian president, but failed in what many believed was an attempt to change the constitution to enable him seek a third term in office.

UGMC registration saga: Rojo Mettle Nunoo breaks silence

0

Former Deputy Minister of Health, Rojo Mettle Nunoo ,  has explained how his name got onto  the  list of Directors of  the newly built 650-bed University of Ghana Health Facility.

Minister of Heath, Kwaku Agyeman Manu told Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka FM’s AM Drive Tuesday that Rojo Mettle Nunoo, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey and two others had registered the ultra-modern health facility in their name.

The minister said checks at the Registrar General’s Department established that the health facility has been registered in the names of the three individuals with the name “University of Ghana Medical Centre”.

However, in a statement sent to Atinkaonline Tuesday,  Mr Mettle Nunoo explained,  “the UGMC Ltd (special purpose vehicle ) was to have a board of eminent Ghanaians in business and investment, hospital management, health facility operations, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, investment lawyer and the Vice Chancellor.

Below is the full statement:

The Ministry of Health in 2015 signed an Agreement transferring management of the 650 bed hospital to the University of Ghana.

This was to ensure that a Special Purpose Vehicle legal entity and company will be created to manage the facility and protect the facility from unnecessary political and administrative interference. This was to protect the facility from exactly what the NPP is currently seeking to do.

The UGMC Ltd (special purpose vehicle ) was to have a board of eminent Ghanaians in business and investment, hospital management, health facility operations, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, investment lawyer and the Vice Chancellor. The board was to be accountable to the University Council of Ghana.

The retiring VC of LEGON was to be Chairman of the board and Prof Aaron Lawson, a former Provost of the College of Health a Sciences and Project Coordinator from day one were appointed by the University Council to serve in the board of the UGMC Ltd. as Director and Acting CEO.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana is also a member of the board.

Government was to appoint two representatives also to serve in the board. Since the project was championed by the Ministries of Health and Education it was expected that Givernment would nominate the relevant reps accordingly.

The Secretary to the UGMC Board is a Legal Director of the University of Ghana.

I was also appointed in recognition of my having championed the project and my understanding of issues relating to the project.

The Legal Division of the University of Ghana duly worked on the registration.

Oscars 2018: ‘Shape of Water’ leads with 13 nominations

0

“The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro’s romantic ode to the horror films of his youth, dominated the 90th Academy Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up a leading 13 nominations.

It was followed by “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” with 9 nominations, and “Dunkirk” with 7 nominations. All three films earned Best Picture nods. The rest of the category was rounded out by “Call Me By Your Name,” “Darkest Hour,” “Get Out,” “The Phantom Thread,” and “The Post.”

“This has been a remarkable year for the movies,” Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences President John Bailey said before nominations were announced.

Indeed it was, but as much for what happened behind-the-scenes as for the on-screen work. That’s because this year’s Oscars are unfolding at a time of tumult for the movie business. In October, dozens of women stepped forward to accuse indie producer Harvey Weinstein of harassment and assault. The filmmaker was a mainstay of awards season, credited with creating the modern Oscar campaign (a seemingly endless parade of celebrity grip-and-grins paired with a whisper network aimed at crippling the perceived frontrunners). Since the allegations broke, Weinstein has been fired from his company and drummed out of the industry. But the issue has only widened. Scores of big names — a group ranging from Oscar winners Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman to A-list director and film financier Brett Ratner — have all been accused of sexual misconduct.

Spacey’s fall ended up working to the advantage of one nominee. Christopher Plummer was nominated for best supporting actor after he became a last-minute replacement for Spacey in “All the Money in the World,” filming his part as oil baron J. Paul Getty in a matter of weeks. At 88, he is the oldest Oscar nominee in history. Some performers were bruised by the scandal. James Franco had been viewed as a lead actor contender for his work in “The Disaster Artist.” His candidacy was undone, however, when allegations of misconduct broke in the midst of Oscar campaigning. When best actor nominations were announced, Franco’s name wasn’t among them.

It was a morning of barrier breaking in some important categories. Rachel Morrison, for instance, became the first woman nominated for a cinematography Oscar for her work in “Mudbound.” Greta Gerwig became only the fifth woman nominated in the best director category for bringing “Lady Bird,” a tender coming-of-age story, to the screen, while “Get Out”s’ Jordan Peele became the fifth black man nominated in the best director category. And Meryl Streep extended her record streak of nominations, picking up a 21st nod for her performance as a newspaper publisher in “The Post.”

It was also a day of notable snubs and surprises. Steven Spielberg failed to pick up a directing nomination for his work on “The Post,” while Tom Hanks was ignored for his performance as Ben Bradlee in the film. Hong Chau, a mainstay of the early awards races, was passed over for her work as a Vietnamese refugee in “Downsizing.” Luca Guadagnino, the Italian auteur behind “Call Me By Your Name,” failed to pick up a directing nod despite earning rave reviews for helping the sun-dappled Italian romance. And even as “Three Billboards” demonstrated its awards heft, Martin McDonagh’s directing wasn’t among its nine nominations. The film is seen as a best picture front-runner after it picked up a Producers Guild of America honor last weekend.

Christopher Nolan, whose work in blockbusters such as “The Dark Knight” and “Inception” has earned him unparalleled box office clout, finally snagged his first best director nomination for “Dunkirk.”

The movie business isn’t just being roiled by a harassment crisis. Simply put: fewer people are going to theaters. Domestic attendance in 2017 fell to its lowest levels in decades and the industry is still grappling with how to compete with streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon that offer a seemingly endless buffet of cheap content. Often overlooked by the Academy, Netflix had a very good morning on Tuesday, earning seven nominations, including several key nods for “Mudbound” and the Russian doping documentary “Icarus.” Amazon was largely shut out, picking up a single nomination for Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s “The Big Sick” screenplay.

The Oscars will be handed out on March 4, 2018 on ABC. Late night host Jimmy Kimmel will return for his second stint as emceed.

The contract between the National Communications Authority and Infralocks was only signed by the then director general of the state agency William Tetteh Tevie without being witnessed by the director of legal administration as is the standard practice, the first prosecution witness Abena Asafo Adjei has disclosed.

She also told the court the contract was signed off as National Communications Agency and not National Communications Authority.

Responding to a question from the lawyer of the fourth accused person, Alhaji Osman Mimina Tuesday January 23, 2018 Mrs. Asafo-Adjei told the Commercial High Court presided over by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour that as part of the NCA’s practice, contracts are signed by the Director General of the NCA and witnessed by the Director of Legal Administration.

The application is seeking an order to compel the AG to disclose all witness   statements and list of prosecution witnesses they intend to call. In light of this pending application, the lawyer sort a stay of proceedings until the application is determined.

Justice Eric Kyei Baffour’s court however ruled that the pendency of the application does not in any way affect the ongoing trial. To that end, the case ought to proceed.  Counsel for the second accused person is thus invited to continue with his cross examination of the first prosecution witness.

The Accused persons in the case are the former Board Chairman of the NCA, Eugene Baffoe-Bonnie, former Director General of the NCA, William Matthew Tetteh Tevie, the, Nana Owusu Ensaw and Alhaji Salifu Mimina Osman, both former members of the Governing Board of the NCA and a private businessman, George Derek Oppong.

She has been in the employ of the NCA since 2003. The Director of Public Prosecution, Yvonne Atakorah Obuabisa led the witness to give her evidence in chief before the court. She indicated that with the exception of the fifth Accused person, all the accused persons are known to her.

Mrs. Asafo Adjei told the court that the 1st Accused is the former board chairman of the NCA, 2nd accused person is the former Director General of the NCA. 3rd and 4th Accused persons she said were members of the Governing Board of the NCA.

Contract Documents

IDL and NCA contract document according to the first prosecution witness who is the Custodian of all contracts of the NCA as Director of Legal Administration, indicated that she has never seen nor worked on the said contract ever in the cause of her work. She also indicated that she only saw the document when the investigator in the case before the court brought it to her attention for identification. The document after it was considered by the court and the defence team was admitted into evidence and marked as IDA.

Minister accuses Rojo Mettle Nunoo, others of “stealing” UGMC

0

Minister for the Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has accused Former Deputy Health Minister, Rojo Mettle Nunoo, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey and one Prof. Aaron Nii Lante Lawson of registering the newly built 650-bed University of Ghana Medical Center in their names.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive,  he said checks at the Ministry of Health at the Registrar General's Department revealed that the “University of Ghana Medical Centre” was registered in the names of the three individuals.

According to him, all teaching hospitals across the country are not managed by the Ministry of Health and that it only takes care of such  facilities.

“No University manages its Hospital.. the ministry by its rules,  collaborates with the University to give them access to the facility to use as teaching and learning grounds for students. The Ministry of Health manages all teaching hospitals and not the universities,” he added.

The Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health, Robert Cudjoe has also denied reports that the ministry is embarking on a total takeover of the University of Ghana Medical Center adding that National Security was at the site on the ministry’s orders to assess the security situation at the premises.

Sex video girl is 20 years old, not 16 – GNAT

Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has revealed that the lady in the latest viral sex video involving the Head Teacher of Edumanu D/A Basic School, is 20 years old and not 16 as reported.

A video involving Head Teacher of Edumanu D/A Basic School allegedly having sex with one of his pupils at Breman Edumanu in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District of the Central region went viral over the weekend.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, the General Secretary of GNAT, David Ofori Acheampong stated that report available to  them (GNAT) indicates that the parents of the girl in the video are aware of the sexual relationship between the head teacher and the student.

According to him, the girl in question is a 20 -year -old Senior High School (SHS) student and not a  pupil of  Edumanu D/A Basic School  as reported by the media.

He added that although the act is against the principles of the Ghana Education Service (GES), this is an issue of morality and that there is little the service can do since the lady in question is not a student in the head master's school. He, however, stated that the issue is still under investigations.

“In this particular matter, it is more of an issue of morality since the student is not directly under the head teacher. My understanding is that a gentleman who felt jilted by the lady in question circulated the video to disgrace her”, he stated.

He added that the head teacher is  permitted to take a legal action if he feels his privacy has been invaded by person involved in the circulation of the video.
