Residents of Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region have staged a protest against what they describe as the unlawful takeover of a local mining concession by government officials and party representatives.
The protestors accuse the Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Captain Mohammed Jabari, and Chairman Gariba of the ruling party in Adansi Akrofuom, of forcefully removing the CEO of Smart Micky Mining Company, Mr. Michael Owusu, from the site.
They allege the site has since been handed over to new management said to be loyal to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with proceeds allegedly benefiting the party.
The residents, many of whom are employed by the company, expressed outrage, noting that the mining firm has significantly contributed to the community. They cited its corporate social responsibilities, including the construction of a police station, school buildings, a chief’s palace, and health facilities, as well as support for women’s empowerment and education.
During the peaceful demonstration, the convener for the aggrieved residents appealed directly to former President John Mahama to intervene and stop the alleged actions of his party members.
Opinion leaders in the town also joined calls for intervention, urging the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to step in to prevent unrest and preserve peace in the community.
The residents insist that the mining concession must be returned to its original management, describing the seizure as unfair and politically motivated.
