Ridge site for National Cathedral bad –NPP MP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Dormaa West in the Brong Ahafo Region, Halidu Ali Maiga, has expressed his displeasure at the Ridge choice of  site earmarked  for the construction of the proposed  5000 seater National Cathedral.  

The government through  the former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Pater Amewu, had announced  that the Scholarship Secretariate ,the Passport Office at Ridge and  some nine bungalows occupied by Appeals Court Judges as well as other structures will be demolished to make way for the construction of a 5000 seater National Cathedral. The descision since its announcement has received a barrage of criticsm from some section of Ghanaians .

The debate as to whether or not the construction of a national cathedral is the country’s top most priority has been raging on in the media for some time now with government communicators trying hard to justify the descision .

However In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive,The NPP  MP for Dormaa West in the Brong Ahafo Region, Ali Maiga stated that although he has no qualms in government’s decision to construct a National Cathedral, he is disappointed that some notable buildings such as the passport office and residence of judges will be destroyed in order to construct the proposed  5000 seater National Cathedral.  

“There are several government lands across the country which remains untouched, the national Cathedral can be built on those lands. The government can come to Dormaa West there are lands there”, he added.

According to him, less than 20% of Ghanaians will approve of the need for the construction of a national cathedral should a survey be conducted.

A Former National Youth Organiser of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, Popularly Known as "Kabila" is currently at the Supreme Court, seeking to quash government’s decision.
