Former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba has taken a swipe at the incumbent NPP government for paying paltry sums of money to school feeding caterers for the preparation of meals for school children.
In her critique of the government on Atinka TV’s flagship afternoon polical programme,Agenda hosted by Nana Yaw Fianko, the former National Women Organizer for the NPP registered her displeasure with the government’s nonchalant attitude towards the school feeding programme, indicating that the minimum amount should be GHS 4 per head.
She argued that most caterers are unintentionally underfeeding the children because they have no choice. The maverick politician believes that the children can only be fed well if the caterers are paid well.
“The government should increase the money from GHS 1.20 to at least GHS 4. We can only criticize the caterers if we pay them well, but as long as we pay them with that small amount, we can’t question them. The government is pretending to pay the caterers and the caterers are also pretending to cook. The Controller and Accountant General’s report reveal that some of the caterers are not cooking well, but how can that small money cook nutritious food? If we believe children are the future, then we must do the needful”, she said.
