Shortage of feed affecting Ghana’s poultry industry

Ghana’s poultry industry has in recent times been challenged due to shortage of feed for the birds.

According to the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association, Michael Nyarko Ampem, shortage of maize, soya, sorghum have largely contributed to the situation.

He shared these during an interview with our business news desk.

According to Michael Nyarko Ampem, a bag of maize, which was formerly sold at ¢65.00 is currently selling at ¢150.00, wheat bran has shot up to ¢17.00 while the price of soya has also increased from ¢120.00 to ¢ 200.00.

He added that the effect of the recent price hikes has resulted in a number of poultry farmers exiting the industry due to the fact that their working capital has equally dropped.

On the issue of some industry players calling for the dismissal of the Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Mr. Ampem stated that the challenge being experienced currently will certainly not end with the dismissal of the sector minister especially since he works with a team.

In an interview with Traders at Nima market, they alluded to the fact that prices of these food crops have indeed shot up resulting in drivers who transport these food items also increasing transport fares.

 The situation they say has also forced them to increase prices of these food items.

Recently poultry farmers in the country appealed to President Akufo-Addo to sack the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto for his failure to sustain the local poultry industry from slumping.

The Bono Regional Chairman for Poultry Farmers Association, David K Ampofo, accused the Agric Minister’s of neglecting the poultry industry adding that the industry was on ‘life support’.
