Upper West floods: 60 houses, 368 livestock, 334 farmlands destroyed

Member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo, Sumah Anthony Nwinkaara, has disclosed that 334 farmlands and 60 households have been destroyed following a 15-hour downpour in the Upper West Region last Friday.

He also said 368 livestock were destroyed in the disaster.

Some communities in the Upper West Region were on Friday cut off from the Regional Capital, Wa following a 15-hour heavy downpour.

The flood washed off major road roads in the area, with hundreds of commuters getting stranded due to the situation.

Major bridges on the Wa-Hale road connect the Nadow-Kaleo district, Jirapa, Lawra, and the Nadom municipalities to Wa the Upper West regional capital were also affected. Portions of the already deplorable Wa-Tumu were also washed off.

Speaking on Atinka AM Friday with host Kaakiyre Ofori Ayim, Nadowli Kaleo MP, Sumah Anthony Nwinkaara said, all efforts made to reach the affected communities have proven futile since the roads have been washed away.

He added that, assessment is ongoing and very soon persons who have been affected would be attended to.

“We are still finding it difficult to visit the affected communities because the roads have been washed away” adding that, NADMO which is well resourced to deal with disasters is also finding it difficult.

“All the pictures we’re are seeing on social media were made possible by the intervention of the military, “he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roads has assured the people of the Upper West Region that all affected roads will the fixed in record time.

The sector minister, Kwesi Amoako Atta gave the assurance during a tour of the region to access the damage caused by heavy rainfall to the road networks.

He promised that the fixing of the roads will be done soonest to put the region back on track.
