Sim reregistration: Public asked to take advantage of extension

The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana has asked the general public to take advantage of the extension of the sim re-registration.

 The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana pleaded with government to extend the deadline for the SIM card re-registration exercise.

According to them, the mobile money business will be negatively affected should government stick to the July 31 deadline.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 28, the group pleaded for the deadline to be extended to January 2023.

“As a business people in the industry, it will be very detrimental to our business and the industry, in general, should government pursue the 31st July, 2022 deadline.

“We appeal that with realism and having considered inconveniences and challenges, the government should extend the deadline to January 2023,” portions of the statement read.

At a press conference on Sunday July 31st 2022, Minister for the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful revealed that the deadline for the sim card re-registration exercise has been extended to September 30, 2022.

“That will give us one full year of SIM registration. It will be reviewed at the end of this month and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will be barred from receiving certain services including voice and data services,” She added.

Reacting to the development on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, General Secretary for the Mobile Money Agents Association, Evans Otumfour, called on the general public to take advantage of the extension of and register their sim cards.

He mentioned that although the group called for a January 2023 deadline, the two-month extension is a step in the right direction.

“From the press briefing on Sunday 31st July 2022, government has extended the sim re-registration exercise for two months. Although that was not what we were looking for, we will plead with all Ghanaians to take advantage of the extension and make use of it,” he added.
