SML’s 5-Year Impact: Ghana Gains Over GH¢20 Billion in Petrol Tax Revenue

A Ghanaian company, Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd. (SML), has helped the country increase the money it earns from taxes on petrol and oil.

After five years of working with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the company has made a big difference in how fuel sales are tracked.

Before SML came in, there was a big difference between the amount of petrol reported by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and what the GRA recorded.

That gap was 3.2 billion litres. But after SML began its work, the gap dropped to just 260 million litres.

This means more petrol is now being properly tracked and taxed — helping Ghana earn over 20 billion cedis in revenue.

SML is the first company in Africa to use real-time digital monitoring for petrol sales. It is a fully Ghanaian-owned business that began working with the GRA in 2019. The company only gets paid based on how well it performs, so it costs the government nothing if results don’t show.

Today, it employs more than 450 Ghanaians and keeps all its profits in the country, helping small businesses and the economy grow.

SML’s Director of Support Services, Dr. Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, says the company now plans to expand its work to other African countries.

“Many governments in Africa are losing money from fuel taxes. We want to help them fix it like we’ve done in Ghana,” she said.

The Director of GIMPA SC, Dr. Richard Kwasi Boso, praised the initiative: “This is the first of its kind in Africa. What they’ve done means government can now have enough revenue to develop the nation. Ayeeko(Congratulations) to SML”

Executive Secretary of COPEC, Mr. Duncan Amoah, also hailed SML’s progress: “You are just five years in, but your impact is more than a century. We pray you continue this excellent work in the years ahead.”

SML’s work in checking fuel sales, tracking taxes, and reporting problems has now become the model for managing public money. As Ghana leads the way in digital fuel monitoring, SML’s success proves that Ghanaian companies can solve big national problems — and even help the rest of Africa.
