Socialist Movement presents alternative platform ahead of december polls

In a bold move aimed at challenging the status quo of neo-liberal policies dominating African politics, the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) unveiled its alternative platform at a press conference held today at the Freedom Centre in Accra.

Led by the General Secretary, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the SMG outlined a comprehensive agenda designed to prioritize the interests of Ghana’s working class and marginalized communities.

Addressing a gathering of media representatives, the General Secretary, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, emphasized the SMG’s commitment to steering away from conventional political contests.
Instead, the movement intends to leverage the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections to spotlight its alternative development path.

“Our prime objective is to demonstrate that there exists a different path to development that can meaningfully address the challenges faced by our working people,” declared the General Secretary.
The platform, meticulously crafted through extensive consultations within the Ghanaian left, aims to confront issues ranging from economic inequality to social injustice and political corruption.

Central to the SMG’s vision is the rejection of the pervasive neo-liberal agenda that has shaped policies across Africa since the 1980s. Critically assessing the existing programs offered by other parties and candidates, the SMG plans to collaborate with revolutionary and progressive organizations to advance their shared objectives.

Highlighting key concerns, the SMG’s platform emphasizes economic independence through the nationalization of critical sectors such as mining, petroleum, finance, and agriculture. The movement vehemently opposes exploitative foreign arrangements and advocates for a state-driven approach to economic development that prioritizes local interests and technological transfer.

Furthermore, gender equality stands as a non-negotiable cornerstone of the SMG’s agenda. The movement pledges to implement progressive measures, including six-month paid maternity leave for pregnant women in both public and private sectors, support systems for expectant fathers, and the establishment of early childcare facilities.
These initiatives aim to dismantle barriers hindering women’s full participation in public life and economic empowerment.

As the 2024 elections draw nearer, the SMG seeks to harness the political discourse to shift focus towards substantive issues affecting Ghanaians daily.
The platform’s unveiling marks a significant moment in Ghanaian politics, challenging conventional wisdom and offering a distinct vision for the nation’s future.

The coming months will test the reception of the SMG’s alternative platform among voters and political stakeholders, shaping the landscape of Ghanaian politics leading up to the crucial electoral season.
