SONA 2026: Mahama Credits Tema Oil Refinery Leadership for Operational Revival

SONA: Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the leadership of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for what he described as a remarkable operational turnaround, marking a new chapter in the refinery’s troubled history.

Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, President Mahama praised the Managing Director and management team of TOR for reviving the once-dormant facility and restoring confidence in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

“For years, TOR symbolised unrealised potential and financial distress. Today, it stands as a testament to what disciplined leadership, transparency, and strategic partnerships can achieve,” the President stated.

According to President Mahama, the revival of TOR followed deliberate reforms aimed at restructuring its debt profile, renegotiating supply agreements, and improving corporate governance.

The administration also supported efforts to secure reliable crude supply arrangements and rehabilitate critical processing units.
The President noted that renewed operations at the refinery are expected to reduce pressure on foreign exchange used for fuel imports, create jobs, and strengthen Ghana’s energy security.

He further emphasized that the turnaround aligns with his government’s broader industrialisation agenda, which seeks to revitalise key state-owned enterprises and position them as drivers of economic growth.
