Surge in Covid-19 cases due to neglect of safety protocols – GMA

The Deputy General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Titus Beyuo, has revealed that routine surveillance by the association exposed non-adherence to the laid down Covid-19 safety protocols by a chunk of Ghanaians.
Government lifted the four-week lockdown after it said it had come to a better understanding of the rate of infection of the disease through an enhanced testing programme and the expansion of isolation and treatment centres.
Other restrictions like  ban on social gatherings and closure of schools and border crossings stay shut till the end of May to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
After the lockdown was lifted, the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks by the general public in Accra.
This development forms part efforts by government to ensure compliance with the President’s directive on social distancing and wearing of face masks in Accra.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s Morning show “AM Drive, with host Ekourba Gyasi, Deputy General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Titus Beyuo, noted that after the lockdown was lifted, most people threw caution to the wind.
He gave instances where people who were in nose masks removed it when they were about to speak and placed it on afterwards.
“We observed that Ghanaians are not obeying the safety precautions; for instance how people are observing the social distancing directive is nothing to write home about. We all heard the President when he said one person infected over 500 people in Tema,” he said.
Commenting on the call for Church activities to resume, Dr. Titus Beyuo noted that although the call and the measures are legitimate, lifting the ban on social gatherings is not the way to go.
Heads of Christian Ecumenical Bodies in Ghana have expressed their readiness to resume Church activities.
The heads have come up with a proposal spelling out modalities under which they can safely perform their programmes without putting the lives of congregants at risk.
The proposal comes after a meeting between President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and leaders of the Christian faith at the Jubilee House on April 21, 2020.
