Tema: Man hospitalised, squatters displaced after Tuesday dawn rainfall

A middle -aged man in Manhean, a suburb of Tema Newtown has been hospitalized following the shock of seeing his room submerged by flood during Tuesday dawn heavy rainfall.

Several wooden structures were also submerged by the flood, leaving dozens of squatters displaced.

Over 50 households in Tema Manhean were displaced by the rainfall which was witnessed in parts of Accra.

Several wooden structures at Valco Down, an area within the Tema Manhean community, were submerged by the flood destroying several properties belonging to the squatters.

The frequent flooding in the area has been blamed on contractors working on an oil refinery project . Residents claim the project is blocking a waterway which connects water attributes to the Chemu Lagoon.

This morning’s flooding in the area nearly claimed the life of a 4 -month -old baby who was rescued by some residents.

A former assemblyman for the area, Godfred Abbey called on authorities to intervene to ensure contractors working on the refinery project do the right thing to save lives and properties.

Meanwhile, the situation wasn’t any different from Abonkor, another suburb of Tema Newtown.

Residents, workers and students were left stranded after the only bridge connecting their community to that of the main industrial road was washed away by the flood. Some workers and school children were either compelled to return home or walk a distance of about 5 kilometers to access an alternative route.
