Tension brewing in Central Tongu over the Independent Candidate’s billboards

A brewing storm is unfolding in the Central Tongu constituency as billboards featuring Selorm Dramani Dzramado, an aspiring independent candidate, have surfaced, including images of him alongside former President John Dramani Mahama. The move has infuriated the local NDC leadership, with constituency chairman Addison Dodzi Monyuie allegedly demanding the removal of the billboards.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of over 50 young men and women erected the billboards and engaged with passersby to rally support for Dzramado’s candidacy in the 2024 general election.

Dzramado, who claims to believe in the ideology of the NDC and Mahama’s vision, has refused to back down, stating, “I’m not a card-bearing member of the NDC, but I know John Dramani Mahama is the right person to deliver this country from the current government’s mismanagement.”

The NDC Constituency Chairman, Monyuie Dodzi Addison, has accused Dzramado of previously speaking ill of Mahama in 2012 and 2016, questioning his sudden use of the former President’s images for his campaign.

The situation has sparked a heated debate in the constituency, with Dzramado’s supporters arguing that he has the right to associate with any political figure, while the NDC leadership sees it as a ploy to confuse voters.

The developments have raised questions about the limits of political expression and the rules governing electoral campaigns in Ghana. We await the Electoral Commission’s response as the situation develops.
