A National Communications Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Appiah Owusu has urged politicians not to politicise the tidal wave disaster which has caused mass destruction to residents of Keta and its environs.

He was of the belief that the tidal wave was a natural disaster, hence unfair to politicise it.

Three constituencies in the Volta Region, Ketu South, Keta and Anglo were hit by tidal waves over the weekend.

It was reported that about 600 residents of Adina, a coastal community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region were displaced over the weekend when the ravaging sea swept through their homes and destroyed properties.

This followed a similar incident at a nearby area, Amutinu when the sea water finally ran across the Aflao-Keta road to wreak havoc in many homes.

Following the disaster, a ban has been placed on sand mining activities at the beaches with immediate effect and until further notice.

The ban is part of measures adopted by the municipal assembly, to curb sea erosion that has been blamed largely for the recent tidal waves that wrecked peoples’ homes in that enclave.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Nana Appaih Owusu Appiah explained that if politicized, at the end of the day, government will not be able to achieve its goal of building a sea defence and protect the people from being hit hard when the disaster occurs again.

“I do not want us to politicise this issue,” he said.

Nana Appiah Owusu described as pathetic on the part of the MP who said there were sand winning activities ongoing at the beaches and later came out to deny it because the Minority was trying to play politics with the issue.

Meanwhile, he underscored the need to sound warning to culprits and stop the activity so that the people can be protected.
