A Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Akwesi Mensah has slammed government for not acting swiftly over the tidal waves at Keta and its environs.

Three constituencies in the Volta Region, Ketu South, Keta and Anglo were hit by tidal waves over few weeks ago.

It was reported that about 600 residents of Adina, a coastal community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region were displaced over the weekend when the ravaging sea swept through their homes and destroyed properties.

This followed a similar incident at a nearby area, Amutinu when the sea water finally ran across the Aflao-Keta road to wreak havoc in many homes.

Following the disaster, a ban has been placed on sand mining activities at the beaches with immediate effect and until further notice.

The ban is part of measures adopted by the municipal assembly, to curb sea erosion that has been blamed largely for the recent tidal waves that wrecked peoples’ homes in that enclave.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr. Peter Akwesi Mensah expressed disappointment in the government for allegedly presenting only seven mattresses to the affected residents, saying it was an insult to the people.

Although he observed that NADMO had visited the victims with some relief items, he was also of the view that the President or the Vice President should have visited the victims when the issue occurred, slamming them for not being able to visit the victims till date.

“The government is complacent. Such a disaster has happened and if you are going to give them relief items you give them seven mattresses. I cannot think far,” he said.
