Time to Correct Wrongs, Not Pay Back – MP Xavier-Sosu on Legal Counsel Role

Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu Esq., has emphasized the need for a “reset” in Ghana’s legal education and professional regulation, stating that his new role within the General Legal Council (GLC) presents an opportunity to correct systemic issues rather than seek retribution.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Hon. Sosu described his appointment as a moment for reform, aligning with long-standing calls for changes within Ghana’s legal education system and the regulation of lawyers.

“A reset means rejuvenation and redirection, and I don’t think it’s a misplaced term at all. Every institution reaches a point where it must realign its processes to meet the needs of the time,” he stated.

He further explained that the General Legal Council, though perceived as independent, operates under the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, and its regulatory framework is guided by the Legal Professions Act.

“In the 8th Parliament, I, alongside Hon. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor and the current Attorney General, tabled different bills to reform legal education and the conduct of lawyers. Now, I see this as an opportunity to work with stakeholders and push the needed reforms,” – he added.

Reflecting on his past encounter with the GLC, where he faced disciplinary proceedings, Hon. Sosu said his appointment is a testament to grace and second chances. However, rather than looking back with resentment, he sees it as an opportunity to ensure fairness in the system.

“This is a classic case of the stone that was rejected becoming the cornerstone. The real test of my work on the council will be the reforms I help champion,” he noted.

Drawing from his personal experience, Hon. Sosu pledged to advocate for a fairer and more transparent system that prioritizes justice, professional growth, and accessibility for young lawyers.

“My guiding principle is simple: Do unto others what you want them to do unto you. If there were injustices in the system that I experienced, now is the time to help correct them. My focus is on positive change, not payback,” – he asserted.

The Madina MP reiterated his commitment to ensuring that decisions made by the GLC align with the interests of Ghana’s legal profession and young lawyers.

“This is a chance to champion a new approach—one that benefits the legal fraternity and, ultimately, the people of Ghana,” he concluded.

His appointment has sparked discussions within the legal community, with many watching closely to see how his tenure will shape the future of legal education and regulation in Ghana.
