Trade ministry to meet GUTA over “retail markets” feud

The Trade Ministry says it is planning to meet GUTA as well as stake holders in the trade industry to resolve the current retail markets feud.

Per the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Law, Section 27 (1) of the GIPC Act, “a person who is not a citizen or an enterprise which is not wholly owned by a citizen shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place”.

This law, according to Ghanaian retailers, has not been strictly enforced since Nigerians as well as nationals of other neighboring countries are actively involved in retailing activities.

The Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA) have asked the government to enforce the law and stop non-citizens from engaging in retail activities.

In view of that, GUTA members in the Ashanti Region reportedly clashed and locked up shops belonging to the Nigerians engaging in retail business in the region.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Communications Officer at the Ministry of trade, Prince Boakye Boateng explained that Ministry will come out with a road map which will entail the stakeholders the Ministry will be engaging.

He assured the general public that the Ministry will ensure sure that the outcome will not affect Ghanaians engaged in retail business in other countries.
