Tunsuom Traditional Leaders Demand Urgent Evacuation of 40-Year-Old Refuse Dump

Tunsuom Traditional Leaders

Traditional authorities and residents of Tunsuom in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region are urgently calling on government and municipal leaders to evacuate a mountainous refuse dump that has plagued the area for over four decades.

According to the traditional council and community members, the dump site – located in the heart of the Tunsuom/Botuku area—has become a serious health hazard, contributing to poor sanitation and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.

Speaking to the media, the Assembly Member for the Tunsuom Electoral Area, Hon. Ali, emphasized that the refuse dump has become an eyesore and a threat to public health. He appealed to both the Municipal Chief Executive of Asante Mampong and former President John Dramani Mahama to intervene.

He added that the presence of the refuse dump has discouraged residents from participating in communal labour activities (locally known as asafo dwuma) organized by the Tunsuom-Botuku traditional authorities.

Beyond sanitation concerns, Hon. Ali also highlighted infrastructural challenges facing the community, particularly the poor condition of the main road linking the Mampong main lorry park through the Tunsuom/Botuku Chief’s Palace to St. Joseph’s Senior High School and Unity Private School.

The community is urging the Mampong Municipal Assembly, the Ministry of Sanitation, and other relevant authorities to treat the matter as an emergency and take immediate action.
