The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Education, Winneba Chapter (UTAG-UEW), has expressed profound sorrow and outrage following the gruesome murder of one of its members, Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedeker.
Professor Amedeker’s body was discovered and exhumed from his residence in Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba, sending shockwaves through the academic community and the nation at large. The incident has prompted widespread grief and renewed calls for heightened security across university campuses.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 25th May, 2025, UTAG-UEW described the killing as a “devastating” and “heartbreaking” loss, expressing condolences to the late professor’s family, students, and colleagues.
“This heartbreaking incident has shaken not only the UEW academic community but the entire nation,” the association stated.
UTAG-UEW extended its appreciation to the Ghana Police Service for initiating investigations swiftly and commended the arrest of one suspect so far.
However, the association urged law enforcement authorities to intensify efforts to ensure that all individuals involved are identified and prosecuted.
“This is not only a matter of accountability but also a crucial affirmation of the safety and sanctity of our academic institutions,” the statement emphasized. UTAG-UEW also pledged its full cooperation with the investigative process.
The tragic death of Prof. Amedeker has reignited concerns about the security of academic staff and students, particularly in the Effutu area.
UTAG-UEW has called on government agencies, university management, and security services to collaborate more effectively to protect educational communities.
“We will continue to honour his legacy by standing for truth, justice, and the ideals he represented in his service to academia and the nation,” the association concluded.
Prof. Amedeker was widely respected for his contributions to education and scholarship. His death leaves a significant void in the academic community.
