UG Disciplinary Committee did not find Gyampo guilty– Lawyer

Lawyer for Professor Ransford Gyampo and Paul Butakor, Francis-Xavier Sosu, says the report from the Disciplinary Committee of the University of Ghana creates doubts in the minds of the public as it fails to state that the two were not found guilty for sexual misconduct as alleged by the BBC.
Prof. Ransford Gyampo  and Dr. Paul Butakor have been  suspended  for their involvement in the BBC sex for grade documentary.
This comes after the University of Ghana completed investigations into the BBC’s Sex for Grades documentary.
The Management of the University of Ghana in a statement, noted that the Senior Members’ Disciplinary Committee has completed the hearing of the matter involving Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor.
It added that in line with Statute 46 (2) of the University of Ghana Statutes, as amended, and regulation 15.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff of the University of Ghana, the Disciplinary Committee recommended a six-month suspension without pay for Professor Gyampo and a four-month suspension without pay for Dr. Butakor effective January 1, 2020.
“In addition, Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor are required to undergo appropriate training on the University of Ghana’s Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy as well as the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff of the University of Ghana. They will be required to receive a positive assessment after the training before resumption of their duties. They are also required to undergo annual assessment for a period of 5 years,” the statement added.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, lawyer for the two lecturers explained that even though his clients accept and respect the decision of the University, it finds the decision a little harsh.
According to him, it is rather unfortunate that the report by the University of Ghana Disciplinary Committee failed to state that the allegations of BBC as presented in the documentary were false and had no basis.
Meanwhile, The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), an Anti-Corruption and Civil Advocacy Group, has also described the report of the University of Ghana’s Disciplinary committee as harsh.
A statement signed by the Executive Director for ASEPA, Mensah Thompson, noted that the report by the University lacks clarity and failed to address the core allegations leveled against the two lecturers satisfactorily.
