UK testing falls below target for third day

For the third day in a row the UK government has failed to hit its target of 100,000 tests per day.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock set the target at the beginning of April and the government announced on Friday and Saturday that it had hit the 100,000-plus mark.

But on the three subsequent days the government has announced a figure well short of 100,000 – the latest figures for the 24 hours up to 0900 BST on Tuesday showed 84,806 tests.

These figures include thousands of tests sent out by post and which may not all be returned.

Yesterday, the government said there was capacity to carry out around 108,000 tests a day.
