Ukraine accuses Russia of shelling town near nuclear plant

Ukraine

Ukraine has accused Russian forces of firing on a town near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as UN nuclear watchdog inspectors were en route to inspect the facility.

“The Russian army is shelling Enerhodar,” Evhen Yevtushenko, head of Nikopol district military administration, which is located opposite Enerhodar town where the nuclear plant is located.

“These provocations are dangerous.”

He describes the alleged attack as a provocation because Enerhodar is under Russian occupation.

One of the shells hit the building where Enerhodar’s city council is located, Mayor Dmytro Orlov wrote on Telegram.

He posted pictures of a damaged high-rise with a hole punched into the side and debris littering the ground.

A team of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) left Kyiv this morning heading towards the Zaporizhzhia plant, to assess the conditions at the facility, and any damage caused by recent shelling in the area.
