The Western Regional Coordinating Council has denied reports that the Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, had directed all 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Region to donate money to support the final funeral rites of his father.

A letter dated 15th September, 2021 which went viral on various social media platforms was requesting an amount of GH¢49, 000 to be paid by the MMDAs to support the interment of the late Nana Boanyina Adusei Mensah II.

According to the letter sighted by Atinkaonline.com,the decision for the assemblies to dig deep into their coffers to support the funeral was taken at a meeting by the dean of MMDCEs and MMDCDs in the region.

“Following a decision with the dean of MMDCEs and MMDCES… it has been decided that your MMDA is to contribute the following amount towards the final funeral rites of the late father of the regional minister…”, the letter signed by the Chief Director of the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), Frederick Agyemang, and copied to all assemblies in the region directed.

The letter directed the Sekondi Metropolitan Assembly, the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly, the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly, the Ellembelle District Assembly and the Effia Kwesiminstim Municipal Assembly pay an amount of GH¢5,000.

Ahanta West, Wassa Amenfi East and Jomoro, are to pay GH¢3,500 each. The letter further directed Wassa East, Shama, Wassa Amenfi Central, Nzema East and Mpohor to pay GH¢2,000 each.

But a letter signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Western Regional Coordinating Council,Charles Cobbinah said, the Regional Minister has not instructed any MMDA to make payment to support his father’s funeral or any other funeral.

The letter however urged the public to disregard and consider as not true any such information as the purported letter did not have the seal of the Western Regional Cordinating Council.
