“Walk the Talk on Komenda Sugar Factory” – Sugarcane Farmers to Trade Minister

The Sugarcane Farmers Association of Ghana has called on the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry to act swiftly on promises made concerning the revival of the Komenda Sugar Factory.

In a press statement dated May 4, the group expressed disappointment with what they describe as the government’s lack of urgency and action, two months after the minister’s visit to the factory site.

According to the Association, while they acknowledge receipt of a response letter from the Ministry dated April 29, the content failed to provide convincing timelines or concrete steps toward restarting operations at the factory.

“The response is not convincing enough due to precedence,” the statement read. “The NPP government gave several timelines, yet the factory never became operational. We do not want the NDC to follow the same path.”

The farmers, who say they supported and voted for President John Mahama because of his commitment to revive the factory he established during his earlier tenure, are now demanding visible progress.

They noted that the Komenda Sugar Factory was not even captured in the 2025 national budget, raising doubts about the government’s priorities.

“If the minister really meant what she told us on February 26, 2025, by now, the management would have started engaging with farmers. We are ready to feed the factory,” they said.

The Association further recommended that the government urgently constitute a board of directors for the factory, with competent individuals and a representative from the Sugarcane Farmers Association to ensure farmers’ interests are protected.

They also reminded President Mahama of his campaign assurance to make the Central Region the leading producer of sugar in Ghana.

“Long live President Mahama, long live Vice President Naana Jane, long live the NDC government,” – the statement concluded.
