The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, Mr Charles Kwasi Addo has debunked the notion that Momo Agents have commission in the 1.50 per cent E-Levy.

According to him, the money will go directly to government’s coffers and so there is no way they have a stake in the levy.

The E-Levy was passed, the Minority on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

Although the Momo Agents were not supportive of the E-levy, they have accepted its passage.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Mr Charles Kwasi Addo said,”If someone tells you that mobile money agents have a pesewa in the 1.50 E-levy, it is not true.”

He said, “It is a system and so automatically as you are doing your transaction, the system debits it and when it happens, the government has opened a portfolio in which all the monies go into and so no one has a stake in it. It is meant for development.

The Momo Agent’s PRO continued that, “Interestingly, if you get a pesewa in it and it does not help many Ghanaians, mind you that the more the people transact, the more you get your money but if a lot of people withdraw, then what will you gain?”

He stressed that it is never true that Agents have commission on the 1.50 per cent E-Levy.

He reiterated that from 2009, the agents commission on all transactions which is 0.5 per cent has remained the same since.

“If we have something to say, we will not do it on behalf of government. For the government, we can only plead with it to give us money as capital, but if we want to say something, it will be with the Telcos through the National Communications Authority and the Ministry of Communication so there is no truth in that,” he said.
