Who should debate budget when ministers are ‘chilling’ in Qatar?- NDC lawyer

Lawyer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team has questioned Ghanaian ministers who have gone to enjoy the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and who they expect to debate the budget in their absence.

This comes after the Minority Spokesperson on Finance and the Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Mr. Cassiel Ato Forson, blasted the Ministers and Members of Parliament who had gone to Qatar to watch the World Cup while the budget was being debated.

Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempreh and the Minister of Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, are currently in Qatar watching 2022 FIFA World Cup games .

This has not gone down well with the minority, hence the Ajumako Enyan Essiam MP taking to his social media account to express his disappointment with the ministers who are in Qatar.

He wrote, “At a time of serious economic crisis, Cabinet Ministers and MPs should not abandon the important business of budget consideration to go and watch football in Qatar! The optics are bad! We need to show we are serious about resolving the crisis!”

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, lawyer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe said even if it was lawful for the ministers to go, the timing was not right and it was also not necessary for them to go since the country was trying to solve its economic issues, especially while debating the budget.

“Cabinet Ministers and sector ministers who are supposed to be defending the budget statement, you have gone to Qatar. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a sector minister who is supposed to take the business of government seriously; you have gone to Qatar, so who should debate the budget in Ghana?” he quizzed.

Lawyer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe also said going to Qatar means they are not taking the country seriously, adding that they need to be present to be part of the debate.

Meanwhile, the debate on the 2023 budget statement and economic policy commenced on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.
