#WorldFoodDay: Youth tasked to explore value added opportunities in Agric sector

The Deputy Minister for Agric, Yaw Addo Frimpong, has asked the general public to look out for value added opportunities in Agric sector.

This statement by the deputy Minister is in line with the commemoration of the 2021 World food Day globally.

The theme for the 2021 world Food Day is “Our Actions Are Our Future. Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and Better Life”.

For the second successive year, the world will mark #WorldFoodDay 2021 whilst continuing to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Through hundreds of events and outreach activities, governments, businesses, civil society, media and the general public promote global awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets for all.

World Food Day was originally meant to mark the day that the FAO was established in the year 1979.

However, it gradually became a way to raise awareness about hunger, malnutrition, sustainability and food production. The UN Secretary-General is convening the very first Food Systems Summit in September 2021.

Speaking with sit-in-host Nana Owoahene acheampong, Deputy Minister for Agric, Yaw Addo Frimpong explained that there are a lot of opportunities in the agric sector.

He noted that the food value chain starts from the time foodstuff are harvested until served at the dinning table where the food will be consumed.

He mainteained that there are opportunities which have been left untapped between harvesting and consumption in the food value chain.

“What this means is that the opportunities that are available between the time the food is harvested till it is consumed is enormous. We should consider looking for ways the raw materials can be harvested and processed for a longer shelf life. We need to encourage the youth to venture into value added opportunities in the Agric sector such as processing and preserving foodstuffs,” he added.
